A domina's only purpose in life was to birth vampire children for the Quiet King. Any human woman with the domina gene spent their lives in the castle under strict rules and the guards' watchful eyes. Brie has been a domina for two years. After witnessing the slaughter of babies, she plans to escape and seeks help from Samuel, a vampire known for aiding many out of slavery.
However, Samuel has only one policy. He won't help dominas escape the king. The penalty is too high and their blood triggers powers in him that he doesn't want released. So Brie is forced to lie about being a domina and Samuel is lured in by her blood. Something emerges within them that they can't deny, overwhelming their every cell and igniting an all-consuming hunger that neither can flee.

I received this book for review months before I became a part of the Vampire King blog tour, so looks like I was always destined to read Escape! It was a short, fast-paced read that I liked, but didn't necessarily love. When I say it was fast-paced, that's what I mean. It might have been too fast for me, because I was hoping for more character development in regards to Brie's and Samuel's characters. However, I liked Brie and Sam! Brie was spunky and headstrong, and Sam was broody and mysterious. Great combo! I just wished there had been a little bit more character-building throughout the story so at the end, I felt like I really knew them. I really liked the premise of human dominas serving the Quiet King as his personal "vampire baking centers". Thought that was pretty cool as it was a new take on the whole vampire thing that I had never really seen before. Then there was the whole bit about how male vampire babies are killed when they are born so there is no competition for the King. Also cool. I liked how Brie's adventure started right away (always a plus), but what I didn't like *dooms day music* was the INSTA-LOVE. Insta-love always drives me crazy! I understand instant attraction and instant "I wanna do you, here and now". That actually makes sense to me, especially where vampires are concerned. But to say you LOVE someone, vamp or not, after only a few days just baffles me. I come across it so much in romance novels and each time I groan when it happens. However, I'm not saying the love isn't genuine, it's just going to take me a lot longer to believe it's real, than a love that grows naturally over a more realistic period of time. I also wanted to see more of Sam's vampish abilities. More blood-sucking, more throats being ripped out, something! I absolutely loved the little plot twist that involves him. It's revealed toward the end of the book and when it happened I remembered asking myself, should I have seen that one coming? Overall, quick, sexy read (with illustrations!), and I'm anxious to find out what happens next with Brie and Sam in Captured and Freed.
A sci-fi erotica/romance novel. Very different aspect to a vampire story but also very good. The whole series was good! They're under 200 pages as well but a good read.
Kenya pens "Escape", the first book in 'The Vampire King Series', with a very well written paranormal romance story line with illustrations that were a really nice touch and totally different than normal. She portrays her vampires well and they were well developed and fantastically sexy..well most of them where. A nice quick read, about 125 pages that will keep you captivated and turning the pages. I look forward to "Captured", the second in the series. I highly recommend this to be on all paranormal romance and vampire fans TBR list. This review is based on a complimentary copy from the author which was provided for an honest review.
I stumbled across a great book review for this book; I just had to read it – immediately. I ventured to the authors website seeking additional information on the book & discover more great news…It is part of a Trilogy – that’s right we get 3 installments. As I am sure you are aware the book market has been flooded with Vampire books, but the author has put just enough of a twist on this paranormal tale to keep make it her own. As a reader, I often feel overwhelmed with information (even critical information) necessary to build the world, characters, background, and plotlines; this author summarized the entire history of vampire/human evolution in 2 paragraphs. I also want to comment on the illustrations; they are fabulous! The author has a few samples on her website which you can view.
I was provided Escape as an ARC for an honest review. Kenya Wright has the awesome ability of making me want to simultaneously applaud and strangle her. Applaud because she consistently comes through with steam Paranormal Romances that deliver with strong female leads, sexy Alpha males and fabulous world building. Strangle, because she is constantly bringing me into her world only to leave me stranded back on Earth wanting to once again climb into her character’s worlds and see what happens next. Escape is a story of a woman, Brie, trying to escape her captivity as a “domina”, a woman who can breed with the Vampire King. During her captivity she has had the luck of being untouched by the King, but her time is coming soon. While held as a domina she witnesses the death of many baby princes at the hands of the King, while the female offspring are bred to be servants if they’re not deemed attractive by the king. She is helped by a Princess of the castle who introduces her to a Pathfinder to take her back home to her husband and children. I don’t want to spoil anything, but lets just say that the Pathfinder is a hot Vamp and Brie is hot headed and hot…where could this lead? Needless to say I am awaiting breathlessly Part II, Captured!
As a fan of Vampire fiction I generally approach new series with some trepidation, for fear of how they will butcher traditional vampire lore in favour of innovation. However my fears were allayed with "Escape" the first book of Kenya Wright's Vampire King series. While still introducing some new ideas and visuals, this sticks to many of the tradtional staples of popular vampire lore, for example vampires can be killed with a wooden stake. But here Wright very cleverly takes this to the next level, incorporating these ideas into the world building itself - for example due to the vulnerability to wood there are no wooden buildings allowed in the Vampire city - creating an immersive and captivating environment. The characters are well rounded despite the fact that we are introduced to them very quickly, the book is not overly lenghthy and gets straight to the point. This is true in particular with the protagonist Brie, a "Domina" - a human woman possessing a gene that allows her to procreate successfully with vampires. Her motivations are sound and relatable, her actions never seeming out of the realm of possibility. The social and political hierachies in play are extremely well thought out and easy to follow. The "Quiet King" - the ruler of the world - is in particular a fascinating character who will hopefully be further explored later in the series. The introduction of the romance between Brie and her Pathfinder guide Samuel is quite abrupt and a little confronting. However this is slowly smoothed out and begins to feel more natural a progression as the story continues. In this it reminded me very much of the Dark Hunter series by Sherilyn Kenyon. The sex (and there is sex, this is an erotic paranormal romance series) is not overdone or crassly described, and helps to build the tension in the main story line. All in all I thoroughly enjoyed this book and am looking forward to the next installment.
