I spent most of the year 1995 evangelizing this record, an excellent collection of highlights from Esquivel's RCA career from 1959-68 (or so). The arrangements alternately swing or have tasty latin Flavor, the pianistics are dazzling, the groovy wordless vocals (POW!) charm, the wacky early synth sounds and crazy arrangements...all are amazing -- the use of stereo alone could sell the record.
I think of this kind of music as the apogee of the big band era, as the sound begins to fall out of the mainstream and rock'n'roll and R&B ascends, so the ''old school'' do crazier and crazier things to compete, to stay afloat. Doomed, of course, but incredible to hear out of context.
Ever since I heard the album in my art class I was hooked. The music wasn't like anything I had ever heard befor.Interesting to listen to, funny, and kind of wierd. I espesially liked "Mucha Muchacha". I highly recomend this album
