I've been making soaps for over 10yrs. and I still revert back to good books for information. And this is a must have for your library if your in the business or just a home crafter. I just wish that his list for Sap values had more oils listed.

Essentially soap is well written and makes a fantastic addition to the beginning soapmaker's library. The tables in the back are perfect for creating your own recipes.

A very practical book with many recipes for the novice as well as the INS calculation to help in creating your own soap recipes. Dr. Bob gives us the Chemistry of soapmaking to help us understand what we do or see in making soap. There are something like 300 pictures in the book which really show what soap looks like at various stages. I liked the really helpful sections on how to color soap and natural fragrances (essential oils.) It has helped me make better soap and to understand why one batch might seem to go faster or slower than another. He has taken a lot of uncertainty out of the process. This is a must for the novice and a real boon for someone seriously considering starting a business making soap. Covers 'cold process' and melt and pour soaps as well

This is the only book I ever recommend to beginners. Written by a chemist, this book has solid chemistry lessons in easy-to-understand language. The photos are wonderfully 'unstaged' and the author does an excellent job dispelling those annoying soap myths so prevelant in other books.

Of all the research I've done, I wish I would have read this book first. So many tasks that I struggled with have been made so much easier now. Such a relief with the soap making process. I bought the book on a whim, and it is the best purchase I've made. Now I'm going great guns at making soap and loving every minute of it. Thanks so much Dr. McDaniel. Hope to see another book from you soon.

I did quite a bit of asking around before I bought this book. I also sat on the floor at Barnes and Noble looking at them all before I bought it. I am impressed because this book has such a diversity of info. I reccomend this to beginners, and those who have other books in their collection. I hope to see Dr. Bob write more books! They tell me that Dr.Bob hangs out on internet soap boards, I'll be watching for you! Happy & safe soaping making! Don't forget your goggles and neoprene gloves! Signed~ a fellow soaper

OK, I hope everyone agrees with my 5 star rating, but I wrote Essentially Soap coming from a background of 20+ years in the soap and detergent industry. With another 7 or so years in making cold process, rebatched, and melt and pour soaps at home and much the same involvement with internet soap groups, I hope that I have given clear directions and answered the most often asked questions. My resource covers fats, oils and essential oils with tips on fragrance blending for therapeutic benefit or just plain enjoyment. There are over 140 full color photographs and 30+ recipes plus discussions of most popular fragrances and blends. Lots of good ideas for special colors and coloring techniques for all types of soapmaking. Good soaping everyone.
