The book is an easy to read comprehensive reference on the clinical aspects of psychopharmacology.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a comprehensive, easy to find reference on clinical psychopharmacology based on class as well as disorders.
Audience: It is targeted towards anyone dealing with clinical psychopharmacology including students, residents, clinicians, and psychopharmacologists.
Features: The second edition of the Essentials of Clinical Psychopharmacology is a comprehensive reference on clinical psychopharmacology based both on class of drugs and psychiatric disorders. Each chapter is authored by the most prominent names in the respective area. New to the current edition is the breakdown of the antidepressant and antipsychotic classes into individual chapters designated for each drug. Also new are sections on ECT and the newer antipsychotic and antidepressants. Each chapter is presented in a consistent format starting with the history, pharmacokinetics, indication and drug interactions. Information is augmented in easy to read graphs, charts and tables. The second section is disease based and has revisions to the previous edition. Of special interest are the sections on personality disorders, late life disorders and treatment during pregnancy and lactation. While most of the information is evidence based, the mix of personal experience sets this book apart from the rest. The authors address difficult situations and give practical information on overcoming these situations that we all see in clinical settings. The authors take into account the variance that we see in the patient populations and advise based on this.
Assessment: This is a very useful and easy to read update that clinicians can use in daily practice as a quick reference. While the textbook is recognized as one of the foremost references on psychopharmacology, this synopsis provides an excellent reference for day-to-day clinical care. It is an absolute must for anyone dealing with psychopharmacology.
