Unlikely pig owners Steve and Derek got a whole lot more than they bargained for when the designer micro piglet they adopted turned out to be a full-sized 600-pound sow! This funny, inspirational story shows how families really do come in all shapes and sizes.

In the summer of 2012, Steve Jenkins was contacted by an old friend about adopting a micro piglet. Though he knew his partner Derek wouldn't be enthusiastic, he agreed to take the adorable little pig anyway, thinking he could care for her himself. Little did he know, that decision would change his and Derek's lives forever.

It turned out there was nothing "micro" about Esther, and Steve and Derek had actually signed on to raise a full-sized commercial pig. Within three years, Tiny Esther grew to a whopping 600 pounds. After some real growing pains and a lot of pig-sized messes, it became clear that Esther needed much more space, so Steve and Derek made another life-changing decision: they bought a farm and opened the Happily Ever Esther Farm Sanctuary, where they could care for Esther and other animals in need.

Funny, heartwarming, and utterly charming, ESTHER THE WONDER PIG follows Steve and Derek's adventure—from reluctant pig parents to farm-owning advocates for animals.

Any animal lover will appreciate this book since it describes the great love that many of us have for our pets. But it also skillfully and non-judgmentally spreads the message about how we need to rethink our relationship with animals for food. Why do we eat some animals and not others? How can we change that relationship to one that treats all animals with kindness and compassion? Many people have been touched by Esther's story and I'm glad to be counted among them. She is a magnificent soul, with an amazing personality, and she's been given the opportunity to express it. I hope this book makes it possible one day for all pigs to have the same chance.

I loved this book. Was a fast read, finished it in one day because I did not want to put it down. Steve and Derek are amazing people for how they have transformed themselves and their lives all because of Esther. But then Esther herself is an amazing pig. I have followed Esther only for a few months so it was nice to have the book filling in the details and back story of how it all began. I love how Esther is changing the world! Someone else said it very well before me but it bears repeating. . . this book "made me laugh, it made me cry" but most importantly "it made me think!" Even if you don't know who Esther is, if you're an animal lover, you will love her story and I encourage you to read it. I'm hoping there will be another book in the future detailing the many adventures of Esther and her world. She has touched my life, she has changed my life. There aren't many books that I can say that about, but I can say it about this one!

I have been following Esther since the beginning and have been anxiously awaiting this book - it certainly did not disappoint! Even though I check in on Esther daily through social media (probably more like 10x / day!) I found new exciting bits of information on every page. As another reviewer mentioned I hope this book is the first of a series!

This is such a wonderfully written book. What a fabulous story! It gives such insight into the challenges, struggles and emotions they went through, trying to give Esther the life they so strongly felt she deserved. What these two men accomplished is just amazing! It was also such a joy to read of the loving, beautiful relationship Steve and Derek have. You can feel the strength of their bond right through the pages. I loved every moment of this book.

This book made me laugh and cry. Such a sweet story and a wonderful prelude to Esther the Wonder Pig's Facebook adventures. I felt like I was sitting in Derek & Steve's living room chatting with them as the story unfolds of how Esther became a part of their lives. Absolutely loved the photos in the middle of the book. All I can hope for is that they make this book the first of a series!

Easily one of my all time favorite books! I follow Esther (and her dads and other sanctuary friends) on FaceBook and couldn't wait to get her first book! I got the last two copies at my local Barnes & Noble and I read it all in one sitting, which is rare for me. This book proves that with a little faith and a whole lot of love, ANYTHING in this life is possible. I laughed, I cried, I reread all of my favorite parts again! Steve and Derek have such huge hearts, and Esther's smile is truly magical. I HIGHLY recommend ordering this book. You will not be disappointed!

LOVED this book!!!! Like some other reviews, I read it in one day, couldn't put it down. I'm in awe of what Steve & Derek went through for Esther to make her life a wonderful one. So happy they got their farm and are helping other animals as well. I hope there will be more books continuing the story of Happily Ever Esther.

To summarize: Esther the Wonder Pig is a great heartwarming and uplifting story. It makes you believe in the power of kindness and shows how two people their lives changed because of the addition of a pet pig named Esther. I really enjoyed reading this book! It was humorously written and also had some scenes where I laughed out loud. Also some parts that were a bit sad or showed some trouble they had to go through, but overall it's a very uplifting book. There are some vegan recipes included at the back of the book and some pictures of Esther and her family in the middle. I just had wished it was even longer and showed even more of Esther and their daily lives. But that's just because I enjoyed reading this book so much! I would recommend this book to animal lovers or anyone who enjoys a good heartwarming story that makes you believe in the power of kindness!

I won this book as part of a Goodreads First Reads giveaway. The mini pig that wasn’t. This is the true story of Steve Jenkins and his partner Derek Walter and how they acquired, and had their life changed, by Esther, a 650 lb. commercial pig. I don’t hand out 5 stars very often, but this book was just too entertaining for me to give it less than that. If you don’t know who Esther is, do yourself a favor and look her up. I’ve been following her for quite some time now so when I saw this book listed in a giveaway, I didn’t hesitate to enter. Luckily I won. There are some people I noticed that state they feel this book is very vegan preachy. I honestly didn’t get that. I am not a vegan nor do I have any intention of becoming one and I didn’t feel a push from the book to do that. Did they mention it? Of course they did. Did they discuss why they chose that path? Naturally. Did it fill pages upon pages and come off as militant? Not even close. What I read was a book about how life can take a completely different turn than you expected. It was about acquiring a dream you didn’t even know you had. It was about family and unconditional love. It was about two guys and a pig. A very large pig. I laughed, I cried, I cringed, and I applauded. It was well writing and brimming with emotion and humor. It was one of the better memoirs I have ever read. Definitely a must read for all animals lovers.
