Dranov points out that, even after weighing the pros and cons of estrogen replacement therapy (ERT), ``the decision won't be easy. . . for many questions about estrogen replacement remain unanswered.'' Her book addresses many of the same questions raised in other books on this topic (Gretchen Henkel's Making the Estrogen Decision , LJ 10/1/92; Wulf Utian and Ruth Jacobowitz's Managing Your Menopause , LJ 7/90; and Ruth Jacobowitz's 150 Most-Asked Questions About Menopause , LJ 12/1/92) . Dranov explains the benefits and risks of ERT in straightforward language. She pays close attention to the risks of breast, uterine, and ovarian cancer; heart disease; and osteoporosis. She also explores alternative therapies, the debate over the benefits and risks of adding progesterone, the various forms of estrogen, and surgical menopause (hysterectomy). Dranov's ``checklist of estrogen issues'' provides a list of health issues for readers to discuss with their doctor. Although she mentions specific articles from major medical journals in the text, the bibliography does not include these references, a potentially serious omission.-- Jodith Janes, Cleveland Clinic Fdn.
