Overview

Ethics of What We Eat: Why Our Food Choices Matter by Peter Singer, Jim Mason

Peter Singer, the groundbreaking ethicist whom The New Yorker calls the most influential philosopher alive teams up again with Jim Mason, his coauthor on the acclaimed Animal Factories, to set their critical sights on the food we buy and eat: where it comes from, how it is produced, and whether it was raised humanely.

The Ethics of What We Eat explores the impact our food choices have on humans, animals, and the environment. Recognizing that not all of us will become vegetarians, Singer and Mason offer ways to make healthful, humane food choices. As they point out: You can be ethical without being fanatical.

I had to read this for an environmental ethics class. I was worried at first about reading it since I do not necessarily agree with Peter Singer's ethical code. However, I found this book a very good and easy read. It presented information in a very straightforward way. Overall, I found the information to be accurate. I would read this book again on my own.

The Ethics of What We Eat follows three families as they make their usual food choices, showing where the food comes from, how the food affects the family, and how those food choices affect the world! The book follows a typical bargain shopper, an organic shopper, and a vegan shopper. Find out where your food comes from and why it is important to be informed!

I enjoyed this book. It has a lot of good information from good sources. It was a little repetative at times though. However, other times they would refer to a person that they introduced earlier and our memories would not be refreshed on exactly who the people were. Overall, I definatly recommend this book for all meat eaters and non meaters alike.
