Now in its 48th edition, this guide to using rail passes across Europe will aid any visitor who plans to traverse the continent through its magnificent train system. The work begins and ends with a lengthy overview of basic train travel information and tried-and-true advice. Each country is introduced with a short paragraph sketching its character. Following this are base city suggestions for mounting a tour consisting of day trips out from a central locale. Each of these is introduced with a brief overview of key sites and rail options. Base cities include details about train travel: validation of tickets, luggage services, station information, taxi availability, food services, and more. Of particular value is a chart showing distances and rail choices to travel from base city to base city. VERDICT Whether a rail pass will save money is completely dependent on the trip one plans to take, but anyone who enjoys reading the website The Man in Seat Sixty-One will thrill to this guide for its train-centric approach.
