About the Author

Richard Windsor, PhD, MS, MPH, is Professor Emeritus of Prevention and Community Health at George Washington University. Dr. Windsor has more than 45 years of experience evaluating all aspects of local, state, and national health promotion and disease prevention programs. Over a 35-year period (1980-2014), he led an evidence-based counseling program cited by the Agency for HealthCare Research and Quality (AHRQ, 2000 and 2008) for routine delivery to patients in prenatal care.

Description: This is an inclusive book on every aspect of health promotion and disease prevention program evaluations.
Purpose: The purpose is to introduce students, members of evaluation teams, and those in leadership positions to the complex issues associated with program evaluation and reporting.
Audience: The audience includes graduate and postgraduate students, health promotion and disease prevention staff, and public health leaders. This is a good starting point for someone unfamiliar with the importance of evaluations and measurement to determine the success of a program.
Features: The book presents information on how to effectively evaluate health promotion programs. The numerous case studies, along with the business side of the cost analysis ratio make it a great interdisciplinary book. A suggestion for a future edition would be to create a summary at the end of the book, in a table format, as a checklist that newer researchers could use to decide what may or may not be necessary for their specific program evaluation. The quality is great.
Assessment: There are a lot of books on health promotion, but none dedicated to program evaluation. The only other book that thoroughly describes program evaluation, Handbook of Practical Program Evaluation, 3rd edition, Wholey et al. (Jossey-Bass 2010), is not tailored to health promotion-disease prevention programs.
