About the Author

Effie Kammenou is a first generation Greek-American who lives on Long Island with her husband and two daughters. When she's not writing, or posting recipes on her food blog, cheffieskitchen.wordpress.com, you can find her cooking for her family and friends.

Her debut novel, EVANTHIA'S GIFT, is a women's fiction multigenerational love story and family saga, influenced by her Greek heritage, and the many real life accounts that have been passed down. She continues to pick her father's brain for stories of his family's life in Lesvos, Greece, and their journey to America. Her recent interview with him was published in a nationally circulated magazine.

As an avid cook and baker, a skill she learned from watching her Athenian mother, she incorporated traditional Greek family recipes throughout the book.

She holds a Bachelor's Degree in Theater Arts from Hofstra University.

Evanthia's Gift by Effie Kammenou is the first book in her Gift Series, and this is a book that anyone can fall in love with. Evanthia's Gift follows the story of an entire family and the twists and turns that take them away from each other and back again. Getting to know Anastacia in this story was such a treat, the strength that she showed as a women with a child and no husband, her confidence in her life choices, and the way that the Greek community wrapped itself around her was so awe inspiring. Flashing forward to seeing her young child, Sophia as a Greek American and her trials of growing up as different from the other children, while trying to be the Greek her family needs and the American she wants to be was hard for a young child to bear that burden. Finally seeing Sophia as a young married woman and her trials with her husband Dean. I can't tell you how much I loved each layer of this story, the characters were so well written, so real that I felt like I got to watch a real family in action instead of just one from a book. I am so glad she is making this into a series, because I just can't get enough of Kammenou's writing style. Kammenou writes so beautifully that she pulled me in from the first page, taking me on a journey that left me breathless with joy and chocking on tears the next. This book really is made for anyone, not just women, because it talks about all the different factors of life from heartache, love, loss, and the simplicity of family. If you are looking for a book that will make you laugh as much as cry than this is the book, heck series for you.

Evanthia's Gift (The Gift Saga Book 1) by Effie Kammenou is the first book in her The Gift Saga. This is a multi gene story that is engaging and will keep you reading until the end. This is my first book by this author and I can't wait to read more of hers. This book that this author has created has something for everyone. I enjoyed her easy flowing writing style that goes right along with her attention to details that made me feel as if I was right there with the characters. Her characters are both lovable and connectable. They took me on an emotional roller coaster ride of laughter to suspense. The twists and turns that it took me on, I never seen coming and kept me wanting to see what would happen next. I also enjoyed the history in this book, the details were engaging and understandable. This is the story follows a family through generations of romance, culture and the test of loyalty. The story starts with Anastacia who is pregnant and alone. She finds herself betrayed and trying to get away from a bad marriage. The good thing is that she has the support of friends. What will happen when she meets up with an old friend? They both have secrets in their pasts but will it destroy their new found family situation? Then the story moves on to the Papadakis couple, Dean and Demi, as they try to move through two different cultures. Then you are going to add a friend to the mix, Sophia who had a connection with Dean since childhood. But when things get a little cozy with them, what will happen? When he is forced to pull away from his family because he loves her, will she get the life she was expecting? The story of two families from two different cultures, many generations between them but will it bring them together? There is a lot going on in this book. It was almost like two different books until I found the common factor with them, pulling them together. It took me a little bit to get into this story but once I did, it really just flowed. There are a few characters in this story but I could imagine them as real people. They will pull at your heartstrings one minute and leave you wanting to throw something the next asking what were they thinking. You need to see what happens to this family, I really can't do this book justice because there is just so much. You just need to read it to see what I am talking about. They really did take me on a historical journey through two different cultures. I enjoyed learning about the different cultures as well. I highly recommend this book I know you will enjoy the journey between the two countries and their cultures.

Evantia's Gift is a beautifully written story with incredible character that will stay on your mind even if you have already finished reading. This book is the first of The Gift Series, and it is one for the ages. This story is one of the most real and passionate novel's I have read in a really long time. If I could compare this book to any other book it would be Little Women because of the close family and heartbreaking moment that Effie was able to create. The pace and flow of this kept me earning for more and it a wonderful feeling (probably not as wonderful as knowing I had the second book ready to start reading as soon as I wrote this review.) to have. I will not lie, I am Leary of books that are more than 500 pages and is the first part/beginning of a series. However, this book doesn't seem to be that long, it is close to 550 pages but its this wonderful literary piece that makes you think and feel in ways you may never have felt or ways you haven't felt in a really really long time. Effie, I want to thank you for the copy of the first two books of this series, I have not started the second one (but trust me when I say that I will after I post this) but I know that if it is half as good as Evanthia's Gift than it will be well worth the read. This is the only book I have ever wanted to rate more than a 5 star. If I could I would rate this a 6 or 7 star. This book is absolute perfection. This review will also be posted to www.heatherbloggs.com.

Reviewed by Maria Beltran for Readers' Favorite Effie Kammenou writes with confidence in her debut novel Evanthia's Gift: The Gift Saga Book 1, where we follow the story of a Greek-American family through the life of Anastacia Fotopoulos. In a story spanning three generations, we get a glimpse of life in Greece through her parents’ and in-laws' viewpoints as the country is ravaged by the Second World War. In 1956, Ana finds herself in New York, pregnant, and escaping from a bad marriage. Surrounded by family and friends, she tries to get on with her life, vowing not to fall in love again. That is until a former acquaintance, Alexandros Giannakos, comes along. Unable to get pregnant again, Ana goes through another painful phase. And her daughter, Sofia, who grows up between two cultures, faces her own struggles too. Evanthia's Gift: The Gift Saga Book 1 chronicles the life of a Greek-American family. As such, we get to learn about the Greek culture and how it is preserved in a foreign country through generations. The recipes at the start of some chapters certainly help to enhance the story. And if it’s location you want, Evanthia’s Gift offers that too, but Effie Kammenou, unwittingly perhaps, shows us that even in New York, a place of many nations, Ana still prefers her own kind when it comes to those she keeps the closest. As the story progresses, the plot reveals a number of fissures crackling beneath the surface - marriages falter and children stray. In the end, this is a universal story of love, pain, hope, and dreams made exceedingly colorful and interesting because it unravels through generations and between two completely different cultures.

In her debut novel, Evanthia's Gift, author Effie Kammenou weaves a beautifully written multi-generational Greek-American love story that will pull at the heartstrings. This compelling family saga spans fifty years (1950s - 2000s), and transports the reader to two continents: Greece and New York, chronicling the rich Greek culture and heritage, lives, and relationships that unifies and intertwines two families. Evanthia's Gift is a compelling multi-generational Greek-American family saga of life, love, family, choices, and consequences. The story follows the lives of Ana and her daughter Sophia, and the trials and tribulations they both face in life and love. The author does a wonderful job of weaving an emotional and dramatic story that easily captivates the reader's attention, and transports them through fifty years of Greek tradition and culture, family life and duty, hopes and dreams, love and loss, secrets and truth, and second chances that will stir the soul. Evanthia's Gift is written in a richly descriptive style that flows so smoothly through the decades as the story of Ana and Sophia unfolds. There are enough intriguing twists and turns and stunning dramatic scenes interwoven throughout the story that will have the reader experiencing the full gamut of emotions and wanting more. So what is Evanthia's gift ... you'll have to read the story to find out. I would be remiss if I didn't mention that the author intersperses the chapters with wonderful Greek recipes that will make the reader's mouth water. I look forward to reading the next book in The Gift Saga. Evanthia's Gift is an amazing women's fiction tale of heritage, culture, family, friendship, and love. Disclaimer: I received a copy of the book from the author in exchange for my honest review.

I loved this book! I am a Greek American and it reminds me so much of my heritage. It starts out in the 50’s and Anastacia Fotopoulos is pregnant. Her husband does something unthinkable and Ana goes off and running to her family. Of course they fix the whole problem (they’re Greeks!) and Ana goes on to meet and fall madly in love with Alexandros Giannokos (what a name!). The child is born and they name her Sophia. The Giannokos and their other Greek neighbors, The Papadakis’, are very close and do everything together. The Papadakis’ have a son and daughter. The son is Dino. From the time they are little children, Dino watches over and protects his Sophia Mou. As he grows up, Dino begins to object to his father’s strenuous adherences to Greek heritage and culture. Of course this causes a rift between him and his father. This affects Dino and Sophia’s relationship as well. You can probably guess what happens but I’ll tell you this. Their lives are like all others; the very good moments intertwined with the seriously challenging. Things do not go smooth for Sophia and Dino and I could not predict (as I usually can do) where this book was going to go. But their love and devotion to each other is the kind you wish and hope for in your life. They are madly, passionately in love. During the holidays, the two families cook up a storm and Effie puts her magical Greek recipes in between chapters of the book. Tantalizing recipes for baklava, revani, tiropita, pastisio, and many more. You can practically feel yourself sitting at the table and eating along with the Giannokos and Papadakis families for Easter and Christmas. Effie’s writing style is engaging. She weaves this story effortlessly, smoothly, and in such a warm fashion. I am in awe of how she sets us up at the end for the next book. Bravo Effie! I can’t wait to read it!
