Overview

Author Jeff Powell wakes up to find the impossible has happened. He is within his own novel—summoned into the fictional world of Feldall's Keep by a spell he didn't write. One the House enchantress hasn't figured out how to reverse.

When the villain he's been struggling to write reveals himself, unleashing waves of terror and chaos, Jeff must use more than his imagination to save the characters he created—and the woman he loves.

Trapped within a world of his own creation, he must step outside the bounds of his narrative to help his characters defeat an evil no one anticipated, even if he must sacrifice his greatest gift. In the end, he has to ask: are novels really fiction, or windows into other worlds?

The Meratis Trilogy centres around author Jeff Powell, who wakes up in his sword-and-sorcery fantasy world. Initially an arrogant and close-minded character, Jeff has his eyes opened to a world of dragons, magic, and assassins. Faced with an evil he could never have imagined, Jeff is pushed to his limits and forced to rise to the most unusual challenges.

I love when an author surprises me. You know, those times when you're reading and you get all smug-like because you think you have things pretty much figured out. Yeah, you are the master detective, all right. Then next thing you know…well, somewhere there's an author having a good laugh at your expense because they just proved you wrong. Krista Walsh is just such an author, and EVENSONG is just such a book. Every time I was sure I knew what was coming, the proverbial rug was pulled out from under me. Pretty soon I just gave up guessing, and let myself be carried away by the story and the characters, and what an adventure they took me on. EVENSONG is the story of Jeff Powell, an author who gets shanghaied into his imaginary world by his very own characters. Being a basically rational man, he of course suspects he's simply snapped his bean due to the stress of looming deadlines, an annoyed agent, and a difficult scene he needs to write. Everything you *think* is going to happen from that point forward...doesn't. And for Jeff Powell, everything he thinks *should* happen...doesn't. I like a story that takes me someplace I didn't expect, and EVENSONG does just that. Krista creates a cast of unforgettable characters that will make you care deeply about what happens to them, just as Jeff begins to do on his journey. Witty dialog always wins me over, and Krista is a master at it. The worlds she creates are rich in detail, full of the sights, sounds, and smells that make you feel as though you're actually there. This was one of those books that was just a joy to lose myself in. I kept wondering what this author had up her sleeve next. Guessing did me no good, I was always wrong. I didn't always like where she took me, but the sign of a good author is one who can make the reader care enough about their characters and the story they have to tell, that at times they must resist the temptation to throw the Kindle across the room. Or send the authors Tweets or FB posts telling them how evil they are. Yeah, I may have done that. EVENSONG is the first book in the MERATIS TRILOGY and I'm looking forward to the next installment. If you like fantasy that transports you, makes you think, and keeps you guessing, then you'll want to grab a copy of EVENSONG and settle in for the adventure.

I enjoyed this story. It is original and well told. I would prrefer it if the use of swear words was not there. It detracts from the story and is not needed.

I guess a lot of plots and sub plots, but this book was great. I could not guess what was going to happen throughout.

I through my enjoyed this book. When i read the description I didn't think that the story could be told believably. I couldn't have been more wrong. I was caught up from page 1. The writing was very well done. The characters came to life for me. The plot was fast paced and immensely entertaining. I can't wait to see what's next in the story and to check out what else this author has written.

I bought this ebook on a whim and I am so glad I did. I whipped through it and immediately downloaded the other two books in the trilogy. Evensong (and the whole Meratis Trilogy) is a light, funny, totally entertaining read with a clever premise. I'm now on to the sequel series starting with Bloodlore. Thank you Krista walsh!

I loved the idea the book and it was easy for me to read. But for as much as it was implied that Jeff's heroes were awesome warriors, they kinda laid down and took it. Jeff increasingly became annoying and the ending seemed sudden and lacked closure. I do not think I'll follow up.

The story was not bad but the story line has been done to death. So all in all a good book for teenagers.

What usually stands out in a debut novel is the abundance of just about everything: unusual character names, clever ideas, use of magic or other effects (genre applicable), and lots of bits of plot. The trick appears to be to play down some of the wilder thoughts that creep into the story, while still retaining the exuberance of a fledgling attempt on a genre and story type. Krista manages this very well; you won't be flicking back a few pages to work out why you don't understand that passage about a magical spell you've just read, and the plot, while allowing for future options (who doesn't want to see the big bad guy make a return eventually?!) doesn't amble off into randomness. There's some decidedly non-standard use of creatures, and some well-developed relationships that hold the interest. I liked the premise - a very clever one of having Jeff the 'author' of the piece trapped inside his own story - his own shortcomings as a writer are laid bare and used against him - some of his characters have developed lives and events he never wrote, a subconscious overcoming of his own simplified black and white approach to his main plot strands. By the end, Jeff appears to have learned valuable lessons in how he needs to think more like his characters and let them live in the pages. A promising tale - I hope there are more.
