Overview

Every Living Thing by James Herriot

James Herriot's final work and last in his beloved series of animal stories

This fifth and final of James Herriot's heartwarming story collections brings back familiar friends (including old favorites such as Tricki Woo) and introduces new ones, including Herriot's children Rosie and Jimmy and the marvelously eccentric vet Calum Buchanan.

As James grows older, he finds that change comes even to his beloved Yorkshire—-but not necessarily bad, as he watches his own two children come to share and participate in his deep love of the animal world. Herriot's last memoir, Every Living Thing is a truly heartwarming read, burstingly full of his deep joy in life, sense of humor, and appreciation of the world around him.

About the Author

James Herriot (1916–1995) was the pen name of James Alfred “Alf” Wight, an English veterinarian whose tales of veterinary practice and country life have delighted generations. Many of Herriot’s works—including All Creatures Great and Small, All Things Bright and Beautiful, All Things Wise and Wonderful, The Lord God Made Them All, and Every Living Thing—became international bestsellers and have been adapted for film and television. Though largely fictional, Herriot’s stories rely on numerous autobiographical elements taken from his life in northern England’s Yorkshire County, and they depict a simple, rustic world deeply in touch with the cycles of nature.

The Herriot collection should be cherished as classics for eternity. His writing gives you a feeling of comfort like sitting in front of a warm fire in winter, or watching the fire flies in summer. When reading his books you cannot picture Herriot being anything other than a vet for his sheer ability to appreciate every living nuance around him - from breathing brisk Yorkshire air, to the lilt or staccato accents of his patrons. Each story is charming, not in just the simple yet under-appreciated point of life lessons, but in the ability Herriot has to paint a story. Each chapter is like a contained short story yet the chapters weave together in a wonderful life documentary. You'll love his neighbors and patients, and if you read it before you go to bed I promise sweet dreams- like getting tucked in.

This is one of the most heartfelt books I've read in years of a veterinarian who really cares about animals, people and everything god has graced the earth with. Everyone, adults and children, should indulge themselves in this great literary masterpiece.

I first finished this book in 1994, and since then every time I feel the blues or have less faith in the world around me, I pick it up. It never fails to cheer me. Each of his stories is unique and ranges from lightheartedness to heavy seriousness, romance to sarcasm. I love his writing so much that Herriot nearly caused me to switch careers to becoming a country veterinary surgeon. I never tire of reading him.

The James Herriot books are my dad's favorite so I suppose part of my delight in reading this book is how it makes me think of my dad, a farmer who's had his share of adventures with animals of his own. I love the simple charm of the stories and the colorful depictions of the locals.

This book, along with the rest of the collection, are my goto books when life has me in a nervous state. Reading about the animals, and the land, I lose myself to a point that I hear the cattle lowing, and shuffling into comfort for the night. I smell the soothing smell of green grass, the sharp tang of manure, the sweet smell of puppies breath, and my blood pressure lowers, the tension headache resolves, and I might stay married foe bit longer. His books have saved a marriage?, and given me hours of enjoyment. I was thinking about it, and I have most likely read each book 20 times, and some of my favorite stories, uncountable.

I love reading about this wonderful man in all his joys, triumphs and shortcomings. He paints a picture of life as a Darrowby vet in England and tells with such wit, and warmth that you imagine yourself right beside him.
