This book is directed to members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormons or LDS) and refers to their church organizations. Despite that there is much here of value to anyone planning or preparing for girls camp. The author discusses the importance of starting the planning process early, especially in regards to reservations so that a location can be safely secured with plenty of time to spare. Also, she beautifully sets forth an outline of all the topics that need to be covered and planned/prepared for in regards to food, shelter, safety, priesthood leaders, youth leaders, etc. I appreciated her thoughts on the importance of choosing a camp theme that speaks to everyone involved and around which the activities can be based. I remember my own girls camp experiences as times of fun but also spiritual growth and a chance to get better acquainted with the other girls as well as priesthood and Young Women leaders. After reading this book I have a much greater appreciation for the tremendous amount of work that goes into making girls camp a success. I liked how Worlton carefully organized and presented her material in logical and practical steps, making what could be an easily overwhelming task into a set of much more manageable tasks. I highly recommend this book for those who are looking at planning for or preparing a girls camp of any size.
I have to say, I loved this book. Stephanie's organizational skills are phenomenal. When I was involved in Girls Camp, I felt a bit like one of the girls instead of a leader. I was so unorganized that all of the preparations and planning had to be done by someone else. Give me Stephanie's guide and I bet I could do a darn good job. Her book covers everything from beginning to end. If you are unorganized like I am, let Stephanie's book do the organizing for you. She leaves nothing to the imagination.
The straightforward layout of this book creates motivation and ease for a brand new leader, as well as new discoveries and reminders for well seasoned leaders. It is a must-have to assist in preparing for Girls Camp on a ward or stake level, a book to read, and write in, and use as a resource year after year. She's included well organized plans, scheduling timelines, theme ideas, food purchasing helps, recipes, and “how-to’s” that motivate and prepare for a great girls camp experience. I appreciated the suggestions on timelines, helps for creating and organizing committees, and certification ideas for before, during and after girls camp. I especially liked her reminders to include each girl, leader, and particularly the priesthood brethren and leaders. Thank you for such a solid how-to, go-to book!!
