Unlike the first volume of Evolution, John Lewis's Evolution ll isn't a solo recording. Here Lewis leads a quartet comprised of bass, drums, and guitar and his own piano. There are virtually no solos from anyone but the leader; the attention never wavers from Lewis's playing, compositions, or arrangements. He can carry the whole show because his art has never been more refined and more expressive. Lewis can do more with a handful of notes than others can do with a hundred, his minimalist style says only what needs to be said. Caressing a few standards, a few new tunes, and some Modern Jazz Quartet standards, including the ubiquitous "Django," Lewis adds new meaning to the term "artistic maturity." Evolution was a remarkable album; its follow-up is even more satisfying.
