Lisa Haynes has a way of luring readers with refreshingly intense language, and endings that offer subtle and veridical power. Enhancing her imagery through a skillful play of metaphors, the psychological complexities behind her poetry are as haunting as they are bracing. Another key characteristic of Haynes' poetry is lyrical honesty as she maps-out the vast landscape of human loss, not forgetting that she herself is woven into its scenery. In Lisa Haynes, we witness an astonishing writer who knows intimately the power of human language. This Seattle-based poet comes with my highest recommendation.

Contemporary poetry of this ilk deserves to be read and shared. I bought this book on impulse. I can't recall just why but no doubt I was caught by the intriguing title, 'Ex-Lovers & More Important Losses.' It lives up to the book jacket reviews. The poetry is raw and often devastating. Beyond that, it is human and humane. The imagery is sharp and new and left me feeling delighted and sometimes surprised and lost in my own thoughts. I have read it many times, discovering a bit of new magic with every read.

Haynes¿ brings to her poems a voice that is both fresh and mature. Her poems are stories that strip away the non-essential, both from the writer and from the reader, until what is left is a glimpse into the soul and spirit of both. This is a brilliant book, which grows even stronger from re-reading.
