Overview

Ex-Purgatory (Ex-Heroes Series #4) by Peter Clines

The fourth novel in Peter Clines' bestselling Ex series.

When he’s awake, George Bailey is just an ordinary man. Five days a week he coaxes his old Hyundai to life, curses the Los Angeles traffic, and clocks in at his job as a handyman at the local college.

But when he sleeps, George dreams of something more.

George dreams of flying. He dreams of fighting monsters. He dreams of a man made of pure lightning, an armored robot, a giant in an army uniform, a beautiful woman who moves like a ninja.

Then one day as he’s walking from one fix-it job to the next, a pale girl in a wheelchair tells George of another world, one in which civilization fell to a plague that animates the dead…and in which George is no longer a glorified janitor, but one of humanity’s last heroes.

Her tale sounds like madness, of course. But as George’s dreams and his waking life begin bleeding together, he starts to wonder—which is the real world, and which is just fantasy?

I read a lot. In my downtime. Between classes. During meals. Between meals. While driving, even (hence the audiobooks). I was a little worried about how this newest installment in Peter Clines' series would pan out. Alternate dimensions and time-based-retcons are usually a huge turnoff for me, but this book did not disappoint. The story telling was immaculately done, and masterfully crafted. Even though the setting for this particular books was not as continually exciting or as climactic as his others, it was still absolutely enthralling. It was exciting to read (listen to). I've listened to other books on my long commute, and none of them have made the miles fly past like this one. I would pay $50 a book if I could get a book of this quality every two weeks for my commute. Swapping to a new book after this one was finished...torturous. I hope the next one comes out soon.

I'm a world of superheroes and zombies you would think the outcome would be simple... BANG SMASH KABLOOIE. In the world of Peter Clines Ex - Heroes, nothing is simple. Dangers pop up all the time that challenge even the great and powerful. The zombie genre is one I never read. It has been played out time and again. Peter clines does a great job beating life into this "decaying" genre by adding the heroes. They are heroes but they are human and I have come to care for them because of their humanity. I always ask myself what other challenges await them and Peter never disappoints. Read this book. Get your friends to start the series.

In this fourth book to his successful Ex-Heroes series Clines changes things up from what we have become used to from this ragtag bunch of super heroes. Clines strays from the “Now” and “Then” perspectives to give us a fully fluid story. He also strays from the action packed hold on to your seats super power thrill ride and moved to a story that is more of a mystery thriller that just happens to take place to super heroes and during the zombie apocalypse. It says a lot about an author who is confident enough in his base story and his writing skills to change everything mid-series. Clines was able to pull me in, keep my interest high, connection strong with all the characters and made me ready for book five that I will buy without question or thinking twice, even with all the change ups. Book 4 breathes fresh life into the series by taking us somewhere we've never been before: the real world. This may have been my favorite of the series. Either this or Book 3.

I didn't like this one... I see what the author was trying to do, but it just bored me and I struggled to continue reading it.
