Overview

From the vast Pacific Ocean that spreads from California to Japan to the bubbling brook that runs through a backyard near you, so much of our world is underwater. It’s impossible to journey through it all—unless you have the vibrant illustrations of Maurice Pledger! In Explore: Underwater, kids will discover the lives of sea creatures with texture patches, amazing moving pictures, and flaps that take them into the world of the deep.

Explore: Underwater takes kids on an astounding journey under the surface of the world’s oceans, rivers, lakes, ponds, and other bodies of water. They’ll visit crowded coral reefs (some of which can even be seen from space!), lift the flap to learn how they get their bright colors, and meet the clown fish and the sea slug. They’ll brave the freezing cold of the North and South Poles and feel the soft feathery face that helps penguins keep warm. And they’ll peek beneath the pond’s grasses and tall plants to catch a glimpse of the shimmering sea star for a complete hands-on educational experience.

Explore: Underwater is the perfect guide for every kid curious about life below the blue.

Meet the Author

Maurice Pledger is an internationally-acclaimed artist known for his realistic and detailed illustrations of animals and wildlife. He's had no formal art training, but achieves the realism and detail in his beautiful artwork by spending hours in the field observing, sketching, and studying his subjects in their natural environment. First published at age 17, he has since had his illustrations featured on greeting cards, prints, gifts, and books. He has created several successful series, including Sounds of the Wild, Peek-and-Find, Nature Trails, and Pledger Sticker Books. He was the recipient of the 1992 Francis Williams Illustration Award for the Best Descriptive Illustration. This honor is given only once every 5 years by the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.
