Raised in Victorian England, Mary Kingsley was a writer and explorer who traveled to Africa alone-unheard of for a woman at that time. Becoming an explorer in her 30s after her parents died, Kingsley made two expeditions to West Africa at the end of the 1800s. Visiting little-known peoples such as the Fang, she helped promote the idea that African society was complex and valuable. Her books challenged European views, shining a light on the mistreatment of African peoples in Brinish colonies. Kingsley died of fever during a third expedition, ending her brief but influential career as an explorer in Africa.
