Editorial Reviews

VOYA - Joyce Yen
Exploring Math with Books Kids Love constructs a bridge between mathematics and literature. Targeted at teachers for grades four through eight, this book is divided into six chapters that each cover a different topic in math, such as number relationships, systems, and theory. Each chapter highlights several books and contains examples and exercises based on those stories. The end of each chapter contains a list of related books that provide starting points for further exploration. With each book or set of books, the author provides a full lesson plan including a synopsis of the story, specific lesson topics, a lesson objective, and a list of applicable NCTM (National Council of Teachers of Mathematics) standards. The author also notes which pages of the story apply to the lesson. When relevant, the author provides suggestions for how best to use the story, e.g., read aloud or have students read specific passages. Included in each lesson plan are questions for exploration, reproducible worksheets, and answer guides. Not all questions and activities are mathematical in nature. For example, one unit in the statistics chapter explores driving stopping distances. The author chooses A Sudden Silence (Harcourt Brace, 1988) and Binge (Daisyhill Press, 1992/VOYA June 1993) as related literature. The lesson topic is "Drinking and Driving." Students examine statistics on stopping times, data collection on teen drinking, and blood alcohol levels. The final activity involves creating a public service announcement on the hazards of teenage drinking and driving. Exploring Math with Books Kids Love is filled with engaging activities. Students learn about math in the context of other subjects, and many creative links to literature, art, architecture, history, and other topics are provided. The exercises and activities provided in this book will help students develop a lasting intuition for mathematics. Index. Illus. Charts. Further Reading.
