Cardiac surgeon John A. Elefteriades, one of Men’s Health magazine’s ten best doctors in America, shares moving patient stories and lessons about the human heart.
The human heart is a paradox, incredibly strong yet surprisingly fragile. And while stories that reveal its symbolic characteristics abound, there are far fewer that laud its physical capabilities, which are perhaps even more profound.
Dr. Elefteriades, one of the most respected cardiac surgeons in America, has treated more than 10,000 patients in his distinguished career. Now, for the first time, he shares fascinating stories of his most memorable patients and cases—patients who have challenged him technically and moved him emotionally, patients who have enriched his life and expanded his horizons while he cared for their hearts. By detailing heart conditions and cardiac reparative procedures with specific yet accessible medical narratives, Dr. Elefteriades encapsulates the beauty, complexity, and majesty of the human heart.
But there is far more to this organ—and these stories—than a collection of veins, arteries, and valves. These are stories of courage, miracles, and the bravery of patients (some famous and others not) and their families when facing nearly insurmountable challenges, offering a thought-provoking, informative, and at times heart-wrenching study of the resilience of both the human body and spirit.

Reading "Extraordinary Hearts" was like sitting down with Dr. Elefteriades listening to him recount the individual stories of his ten patients, some famous but all incredibly unique. The complex medical procedures and terminology are explained to the reader in an easily understandable fashion such that a person with a basic knowledge of high school biology can follow. It would have been easy for such a work to focus on the medical personnel and staff who performed the procedures as well as the amazing medical advances of which the reader learns, but this book instead shines the light on the true heroes and heroines, the patients and their families showing how the operation or procedure and complex related decisions impact both the patient and the surgical team. What comes through is a caring physician and medical team devoted to each individual patient and displays the reciprocal confidence and trust of the patient in that team. An excellent read.
I simply loved this book. Don’t let the topic of heart surgery scare you from reading this book. It is written beautifully with just the right balance of a very touching narrative and factual information so that the layperson can understand some of the medical procedures and terminology associated with cardiac surgery. As the title indicates, this book truly takes the reader on a fascinating journey. Each chapter of the book focuses on a different extraordinary experience that goes on behind the operating room and including the events following a cardiac surgery. You will experience the interaction between the highly respected, world-renowned expert in cardiac surgery, Dr. John Elefteriades, and his patients. Dr. Elefteriades, by the way, is the Chief of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Yale New-Haven Hospital and has cared for more than 10,000 patients in his career. As the reader, I truly was touched by each unique account of an extraordinary event. Upon reading this book, one truly gets the sense that the author was humbled by his experiences, and the reader, in turn, will be humbled as well. As the book takes the reader on a series of both uplifting and heart breaking stories. It will also get you think about deeper philosophical questions: Are miracles real? Can humans cheat death? You will even learn of fascinating findings along the way. Did you know that many of the world’s geniuses (i.e Einstein) died due to an aortic disease? This book has the perfect package; it is informative, moving, thrilling, and even has a sense of humor. As someone who often gets lost in the scientific jargon that can be present in many scientific journals and books, I absolutely loved the clear writing present in this book. Albert Einstein once said that a true genius is someone who can take something complex and explain it simply. This book does exactly that.
Found the text very informative and very much enjoyed the read. Would recommend for for anyone who may be facing these type issues. Great job Dr. E. - Alfred
