From the Skurfer, invented by Tony Finn in 1985, to the Hyperlite, invented by Herb O'Brien, wakeboards have had improvements over the years. The first professional competition was in Florida in 1992. In 1996 wakeboarding became an official part of the X Games. Courses for professional wakeboarders consist of ramps and sliders in the water allowing them to do jumps and high aerial stunts. This sport also adopted moves from skateboarding, snowboarding and other extreme sports. These stunts include catching air, rolls, flips, spins and grabs. More advanced moves involve trick variations such as a tantrum, which is like a backward flip. The most extreme tricks involve combinations of two or more tricks like in the whirleybird or the "Pete Rose." Trying to keep the sport exciting, in 2000 Parks Bonifay was the first rider to complete a 1080, three full circles in the air. Because it can be a dangerous sport, safety is important and wakeboarders should be able to swim, always wear life vests and need to check their equipment regularly.
