Overview

The first of this Malice Domestic series introduces semi-retired Judge Penelope Godbold. Called Baby by friends and family, though ironically of Amazonian proportions, she is visiting relatives in Barton, a tiny hamlet in the backwoods of Tennessee, which is being restored to its former glory. It was settled in the 1800s by younger sons of English peers, whose local servants came from a group of mysterious people called Melungeons, creating a clash of cultures. Babys visit starts off with a murder of a stranger who had been seen in the woods, a shy painter that no one recognizes. This is followed by another murder, while a wild child named Jincie and her moonshiner father Jack figure prominently in the story. Also concerned is the restoration communitys director, Alistair, and a budding winemaker, Sam. The hamlet is being chronicled by writer Cleo Connery, also a guest of the Godbolds. An attractive TBI investigator arrives to assist the judge as she ferrets out the culprit, which leads to an arrest.

About the Author

A fourth generation descendent of Scandinavian pioneers to Iowa, I have sandwiched my writing into a busy life as a wife, mother of three boys, journalist, Arts Council Director, and more recently, college teacher. Along with my ten published e-novels, I have both poetry and short stories in literary journals and other publications. Since the 1960s I have been a resident primarily of Tennessee with a brief sojourn in Texas. My writing in earnest began with a suggestion from a geologist friend, who had an idea for a thriller: thus, The Moho Proviso became a reality, recognized by the Nashville Tennessean for its timeliness. I joined the Writers Group at the college where I worked and have continued to produce novels in the various genres, including my Foxhill series with the first book in that series, Flowers at Her Feet, set in a fictional historic district in Nashville. This was followed by Neighbors, Ever After, and my most recent one, Grace. I like to think, though, that whether my work is a thriller, mystery, or coming-of-age, the protagonists share the same intentions to do the right thing in the face of various kinds of conflict and trouble that they either stumble upon or that assails them.
