About the Author

Patricia Hoskins is the co-owner of Crafty Planet, a retail fabric and needlework store and craft workshop in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and has designed several of the patterns used in Crafty Planet classes. She enjoys knitting, crocheting, spinning, sewing, quilting, embroidery, and cross-stitching and is a graduate of American University, the University of Oregon, and the University of Missouri-Columbia Library Science program. She is the author of How to Make Slipcovers and is a co-author of One-Yard Wonders, Fabric-by-Fabric One-Yard Wonders, and Little One-Yard Wonders. 

Rebecca Yaker began sewing at age five. After eight years of designing apparel for two of America’s largest retailers, Rebecca started her own design business, creating one-of-a-kind baby and adult apparel and accessory items in her Minneapolis design studio.  She knits by hand and machine, sews, crochets, weaves, dabbles in reupholstery, consults on design, and most recently is passionately learning to become a cordwainer (a leather shoe maker). Yaker and Hoskins (One-Yard Wonders) return with 101 more projects compiled from various contributors that require only one yard of fabric. This collection is organized by type of fabric, and perhaps its greatest utility is the explanations of how to sew best with each. The projects are heavy on kids clothes, decorative pillows, and handbags, though other decorative home items are also included. Although projects vary from fairly simple to more advanced, the directions assume a more than basic understanding of sewing methods and terms. Illustrations help explain some, but not all, steps. Every project includes a color photo of the finished product and a cutting layout for either the included pattern or with measurements of pieces. With so many projects included, most sewers will find some worth pursuing. At the very least, the book provides a sense of the process and possibilities for using various cotton weights, wovens, corduroy, fleece, wool, knits, and other fabrics. As expected, most are for small home decor, accessories, or children's clothing and toys, and they tend to be quick, easy, and accessible to beginners. The organization of the book by fabric type allows sewers to find easily the right project for the fabric in their collections, and there are plenty of diverse choices. The directions for each project are clear and easy to follow, and extra tutorials on special topics (such as smocking) are included as needed. Sewers of all skill levels looking for quick, instant-gratification projects will find an abundance of choices in this collection.
