A story that begins with the discovery of a severally beaten woman left to die in the desert of far West Texas takes on a different perspective as the narrative moves forward. In this novel, Burk probes the dark side of a families hidden secret. As the plot unfolds there are subtle hints of the evil that has captured the mind of a woman whose psyche has been shattered almost beyond repair. Slowly we see minor changes in our heroine through the eyes of a perceptive man who with patience and understanding is helping to bring her back to the present. But the malignancy that haunts her keeps pulling her away into the agony that has captured her soul. The author has woven together the lives of a simple man of remarkable character, a woman whose life has almost been destroyed, and an antagonist whose malevolence brings out the horror of an abusive family relationship. For a time those who are so profoundly affected by the events surrounding this drama dance together in a plot full of intrigue that holds the reader in an almost paralyzing grasp. Burk, in her wisdom, reminds us how fragile the individual soul can be, but by deftly probing the minds of her characters she skillfully brings her story to a climax that embraces the extraordinary courage of the human spirit and the promise of hope for the future.
