Faces of Advent for Christ-Seekers

Overview

On the pages of the nativity narratives, we encounter the faces of people and angels who were participants in the story of the ages, the birth of Jesus Christ. Some, like Mary and Joseph, were main characters whose faces glow with beatific serenity and ferocious protection in portraits created through the centuries. Others, such as the innkeeper and the midwife are bit players whose kindness and integrity shine forth through a careful reading of the nativity narrative.

This collection of readings for Advent allows us to peer through a looking glass to see the faces of those whose lives were a part of the birth story of Jesus, a Facebook of sorts for the nativity. Their frailty connects with our humanity, and their courage gives us hope for today, as we as Christ-seekers immerse ourselves in the faces of Advent.

About the Author

JoAnn Shade ministered as a Salvation Army of-ficer for 34 years, with its labor-intensive focus on service and fund-raising at Christmas. With a desire to remain centered on the spiritual preparation for the coming of Christ in the midst of that bustling activity, she began to share daily writings with staff and congregation to provide a focus to their day, now published as a series of Advent reflections for Christ-Seekers. Faces of Advent for Christ-Seekers is her collection of devotional thoughts for Christmas 2013.

Following the completion and the early days of operation of the Ray and Joan Kroc Corps Community Center in Ashland, she retired in 2012 from the daily re-sponsibilities of Salvation Army leadership. She combines her academic training with a writer’s eye, a pastor’s heart and a grandmother’s joy as she serves the body of Christ through Gracednotes Ministries.
