About the Author

Barb is a freelance writer, corporate minion, over-scheduled parent and connoisseur of fine chocolate. A second-generation journalist, her work has appeared in the Chicago Tribune and its affiliates as well as Mom.Me. Three of her pieces were included in a Tribune Media e-book collection entitled, Love Notes: Stories of Love, Loss, and Coming Together (Agate, 2014). Having spent the whole of her thirties pregnant, she has five boys to show for it. Their exploits provided fodder for her column, The Plate Spinner Chronicles, a long-running feature in the Chicago Tribune, which snagged her a runner-up spot in an Erma Bombeck Humor Contest. A member of RWA's Windy City chapter, she still dreams of the day when her to-do list includes "Send NY Times book critic thank you note" and "Accept Godiva's request to be a taste-tester."

This is the story of Mattie Ross and Nick Derosa. It is book #1 in the series. Mattie almost married Eddie Derosa, Nick's twin brother. She was stuffed into her too tight Vera Wang gown, but was left at the alter. Now 2 years later, she is working as an advice columnist for the Chicago Gazette. She is strapped with debt, buries herself in her work, is not dating, and is still reminded of her childhood "nickname. She is well-proportioned but "Fatty Mattie" still sticks in her mind. Nick is trying to rebuild his life. His twin had stolen his identity and implicated him in an illegal scheme. It was bad enough that he had to be the one to break it to Mattie that Eddie was not going to be showing up, but then Eddie tried to ruin him. Nick is proposed a wager by publisher of the Chicago Gazette. If he can take an out of shape Mattie, and get her ready to run the Chicago Marathon, Nick will have a donation big enough for launching his non-profit kids running club. Nick and Mattie have to work together whether they like it or not. Mattie has to learn that she can trust Nick, and Nick has to get Mattie to believe she can actually do it. Will Nick ever tell Mattie he has been "in love" with her since the 3rd grade? Will Mattie ever believe that Nick is not the person she thinks he is? Be ready for the chemistry that follows. It will be there every step of the way.

False Start by Barbara Valentin (Audio Edition) Narrated by: Wendy Rich Stetson Assignment: Romance #1 ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ I quite enjoyed this story, and it left me with a warm and fuzzy feeling. I listened to it pretty much all in one go, with exceptions for a few short pauses here and there. I felt the chemistry between Nick and Mattie right away which was great and I enjoyed watching Mattie change her outlook on life and herself for the better. The story was well written, the romance was sweet, there were some amusing bits and the characters felt true and honest. I had the thought after reading it that this could have easily been a true story. I have not read this author before, but I will check out her back list. Wendy Rich Stetson delivered her narration well. She had a few different character voices, which made it enjoyable and easy to listen to. * I was given a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. *

Barbara Valentin is absolutely one of my favorite writers! False Start had me laughing from start to finish as journalist Mattie Ross struggles to maintain a fictitious identity as a married working mom advice columnist when really single. Of course, the plot thickens for "Fattie Mattie" when she falls for a running coach who comes with a new assignment.

Fun to read, cheering her on to the finish line. I would like more about her and her relationships.

Can't wait for her next book!

Not something I might normally read, but it was a good book, Mattie was kind of an "underdog" and of course she comes out on top but reading her story we could all relate to Mattie and her life.

Mattie could be any one of us reading this book. A little out of shape and low self esteem. She is given an assignment that forces her to get into shape and face her faults at the same time. She finds that since childhood she has blamed the wrong person for some bullying towards her. It all comes together and she is the one that takes control of her life.

This book had me hooked from the start. The characters are realistic and the story is one of boy meets girl long before any romance takes place! I truly loved the storyline and the pace of the novel. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to relax and enjoy a good read!!

Mattie Ross is a cash strapped advice columnist who agrees to chronicle her 10 month struggle to train for a marathon. The only reason she is doing this is to get a raise. Things go from bad to worse when she finds out her trainer is the twin brother of a man who left her at the alter. This is a fun book that also reminds us not to be to hard on ourselves.

What a great book. I had a hard time putting it down.  I loved that Mattie didn't have a perfect body or a perfect life.  Such a sweet love story.  I can't wait to read the next book by Barbara.  She is a great writer.

Most of us can probably relate to Mattie and her ups and downs, but this tale turns delightful as we watch Mattie get in shape, with the help of her ex-fiancé's brother Nick, for a marathon. Will love bloom? Just open the book and be prepared to be entertained by Mattie & Nick's story.

Yes, yes, yes! I absolutely LOVE this story. Mattie is a little low on self esteem but not so low that she can't raise above it and press on to the finish line. Of course her Coach, Nick does an excellent job "coaching" her with running techniques as well as encouraging her to realize her potential. Lesson learned, with a few bumps & bruises but I laughed along with Mattie as she shakes off her False Start for a New Beginning which happens to be exactly what both of them want & deserve!!

I totally loved this book - a fun contemporary romance with likeable characters that you just want to cheer for. I think every woman can relate to Mattie when she just wants to drown her sorrows and pain in something sweet and decadent. This book had me cheering for Mattie as she faced her demons and searched for love. Thank you to the publisher for providing a complementary ARC in exchange for an honest review.
