From the trenches of the First World War a family emerges
which experiences and reflects the tensions and ambiguities
of a changing society.
The single-minded determination of a mother, the treachery
of a lover, the hedonism of a daughter, the conventional
stability of a sister combine with differing experiences of life
This novel explores both the ties that hold
families together - for better, for worse, in sickness and in
health - and the tensions that tear them apart.
Most Helpful Customer Reviews
Although there are no chapters as such, this novel is broken up into sections that are short enough to be read in brief periods of time, and the novel is easy to pick up and put down without losing the thread. Each section is about a different but related family situation. I found it easy to follow, and enjoyed it so much that I went back to read bits of it again. And later I bought two more copies to give as presents.
