Overview

Far Side of the Hill

Essentially this is The Barry McGuire Album, which was originally issued on LP in 1963 by Dave Hubert's short-lived West Coast folk label Horizon Records, with the title track, "Far Side of the Hill," added from an earlier McGuire album called Here and Now, which was issued the previous year. McGuire was still a couple of years away from "Eve of Destruction," the song that would take his name and his powerfully distinctive voice around the world, and he isn't singing protest material here, but that ragged, hoarse, and riveting voice is everywhere on this set, turning each song into a quietly passionate explosion. McGuire ended up being typecast as a protest singer after "Eve" hit, which is a shame, really, since he was a brilliant singer with a very special way with songs of love and regret. Far Side of the Hill makes for a nice, unsung set, and it's quite revealing for those who only know him from that one big radio hit.
