Overview

Nearly every week of the year, Buck Brannaman is on the road, conducting horsemanship clinics in which he teaches horse owners how to better understand and work with their animals, creating a relationship based on trust and respect rather than force. Buck's skill has become the stuff of legend-in fact, the main character in Robert Redford's film The Horse Whisperer was based largely on him, and he served as the director's technical adviser during the shoot."These principles are really about life-about living your life so you're not at war with the horse, or with other people," Buck writes. At heart, this rich and rewarding autobiography is a prescription for living a harmonious existence-whether it involves horses or not.

Meet the Author

Buck Brannaman is a widely respected horse gentler---not a horse "breaker"---who has started more than 10,000 young horses in his clinics. He lives with his wife, Mary, and their three daughters in Sheridan, Wyoming. William Reynolds is the associate publisher of Cowboys & Indians magazine and the author of The Art of the Western Saddle, winner of the American Horse Publications 2004 Equine Book of the Year. He lives with his family in Santa Ynez, California. John Pruden is a professional voice actor who, through his own voice-over company, Voice Acting With Character, records audiobooks, corporate and online training narrations, animation and video game characters, and radio and TV commercials. His exposure to many people, places, and experiences throughout his life---from his many jobs while a young man; to his Army service as a UH-60 Black Hawk assault helicopter pilot; to his travels through forty-four U.S. states, South America, Europe, and Asia; to his experience in professional improv and singing---provides a solid creative foundation from which to draw for his intelligent audiobook narration and talented vocal characterizations. His audiobooks include Race for the Dying by Steven Havill, Telling the Truth by D. A. Carson, and On Night's Shore and Disquiet Heart, both from the Poe series by Randall Silvis.

If you're looking for a 'horse-training guide', this isn't it. But if you're looking for some guidance, this is amazing. Buck has an amazing insight into not only the horse, but people as well. You may not learn to break a horse, but you will learn to understand him a little better. The insight in invaluable both in horse and human relationships.

This is a great book that everyone should read, unless you live in a cave. Buck is great teacher of horsemanship, but it's not just about horses...it's about life. Buck shares his life's lessons. You'll laugh and you'll cry. You may even want to come see him at a clinic. He's a very special person and a great helper of the horses. Enjoy!

If you're a horse person, you have to read this book! It's not exactly the same as the movie, it has some similar stories, but more added to them, and several that aren't in the movie. Very touching and interesting book. Use the Lend Me feature to share it with your friends!

I give Buck 5 stars on this. Buck writes just like he talks. It's just simple, to the point, with a little humour sprinkled throughout. Here's a guy who came from some humble and pretty rough conditions, He used those, not as an excuse but a reason, to make something of himself and then share that with the rest of us. His passion for what he does is obvious. It is an honest and very open account of the hardships and sacrifices he has made for 'The Faraway Horses'.

If you liked the movie ,Buck, you will enjoy the book. It is basically the story of the book. You get more depth into his life's story ,and some great bits of wisdom. Not a book about how to train horses ,but a story about how training horses connects to how you live your life.

Wonderfully told, a "risen from the ashes" sort of tale. Amazing horseman, and an even bigger man.

Even if you don't know a thing about horses this book will help you just to learn how to deal with people. Buck is compassionate, wise and humorous. There's no one like him. Thank God for the horse's sakes and the lovers of horses he's around.

I was fortunate enough to get one of the first copies in WV, and read it cover to cover in one sitting (worth losing sleep to finish it!) This is not your average horse training book, its Buck's life history and how he relates his life with the horse. You will laugh and cry several times before you finish, but you will also meet an incredible human being who has spent a lifetime working to help the horse and the human find a better way.

Throughout the years there have been many arguments and claims to the title " Horse Whisperer". This man has truly earned it and is one of the pioneers in natural horsemanship. It would be awesome if everyone looked at horses in the same light as Buck.
