The way Cole Bryant looked at it, he was a very lucky man. He was unmarried, lived in the wilderness of Alaska working as a park ranger, and had happily survived 12 winters in Alaska. But all of that was about to change. It all begins when he steps out of his floatplane onto the island where he had built his new cabin and discovers a ten-year-old girl has stowed away. She has no family and begs Cole to let her stay with him. Will he do the right thing and change his lifestyle to care for Jodie? Or will he take the easy road and send her off to a foster home? Before he can decide, they face danger at every turn as they have a frightening face-to-face encounter with a wolf on a mountain deep within the Wrangell National Park, struggle to rescue loved-ones in a remote area of Alaska, and Cole must deal with a forbidden love of a woman he has known for years.

I just finished the book, and I absolutely loved it. Just when I thought I'd got through the main story line and the book would wind down, there would be another twist to catch your attention. I especially loved Strike and Smoke, and of course, the 'justice' done to the 'real' father ('real' father being another interesting twist). Every page turned was like a new adventure. The details and descriptions of the landscape make you feel as if you've traveled to another place. My husband has also read the book and to my surprise (because of the romance), he also loved it -- especially all the details about flying and the mountains, lakes, animals, fishing, etc.
