Purpose: The purpose is to facilitate successful interactions with adolescents, leading to effective advocacy and positive impact on adolescent health outcomes. The author successfully covers a wide array of relevant adolescent health topics along with important discussions related to healthcare ethics and the ever-evolving influence of technology.
Audience: This book takes a broad approach, making it an important resource for professionals new to working with adolescents. Individuals from a variety of disciplines will find it useful, including those in nursing, medicine, nutrition, social work, education, and allied health fields. Useful statistics are provided throughout the book to give readers a basic sense of the issues at hand. In addition, the suggested readings and websites provide resources with further information on adolescent health issues.
Features: The book begins by defining adolescence and continues by addressing adolescent health in six domains: physical, intellectual, emotional, spiritual, sexual, and relational health. At the outset, the author highlights the importance of brain development during adolescence. The discussion of technology and its influence on adolescent health is particularly pertinent, covering social media, cyber bullying, stalking, and confidentiality issues. Tables with relevant statistics appear in each chapter; although references are not always included with the tables, the suggested readings and websites allow readers to complete follow up research if needed. Although the book's broad approach makes this an excellent tool, it falls short in its discussion of adolescent tobacco use, including cigarettes, smokeless tobacco, and emerging tobacco products such as e-cigarettes. There is little information about migrant youth or incarcerated youth, and more information on cultural issues related to adolescent health is warranted.
Assessment: As a nurse educator, I will recommend this book to students and colleagues working with adolescents. Its positive approach and thorough overview of adolescent health make it an informative and practical healthcare guide to have on your bookshelf.
