Editorial Reviews

VOYA - Tom Pearson
This sci-fi entry is a contemporary hybrid-Christian fiction for teens is an established genre, but not in a sci-fi universe. Scott breaks new ground with this near-future tale of gene-splicing technician Tamara Mack, whose recent conversion to Christianity positions her in a deadly conflict of interest. Instructed by her employer, GeneSys, to develop a deadly airborne botulism, Scott resists until confronted by terrorists. Bioterrorism is enacted in both actual and virtual worlds with Internet technology involved in espionage and counter-espionage.

Unknown to Mack until deep into this rapid-paced twisting plot, a counter-cyberterrorism team led by professed Christian Ethan Hamilton investigates GeneSys's subversive and clandestine experiments for private clients. Arab fanatics led by a wealthy businessman motivated by revenge have ordered the development of a deadly botulism mutation. Hamilton's team is composed of rivaling government agencies whose combined expertise, if cooperation can be maintained, is democracy's best bulwark against cataclysmic terrorist projects. A political power play temporarily unravels Hamilton's efforts until he turns spy and penetrates GeneSys's remote island citadel and cyber lockout codes. A computer war turns bloody as faith in a God-foreordained victory pits Hamilton and Mack against a seemingly invincible terrorist force during a tumultuous hurricane. With the help of Hamilton's son Jordan, this otherwise adult cast of rescuers plans a multi-site penetration of GeneSys's operations that include a raid of its secret Indiana base.

For hair-splitting adventure in a hard SF thriller, appealing to computer-wise teens who can follow a rapid chain of cyber and actual events, this is a challenging and gripping read. The world view may be Christian and full of biblical references, but this viewpoint revs the action and satisfies ethical concerns.
