Reviewed by Gayani Hathurusingha for Readers Favorite In the novel "Fatal Intent" by Rashia Kennie, Garrett and her team of entomologists lose their way within the silent depth of Borneo Rain Forest, without the least understanding of what awaits them there. With their guide dead in a peculiar way, they are forced to seek the assistance of Aidan, a stranger, a 'Tarzan' type of a man, bohemian but irresistibly handsome. How long would Garret be able to resist her growing attraction towards him? Will they be able to solve the mystery regarding the death of their guide, whose headless corpse was found floating on the river? The super-dynamic plot of the novel forces the reader to untangle these knots by rapidly turning the pages till the very end. The plot is extremely fresh in its approach and the writer makes the reader accompany the team of entomologists in their journey through the exotic landscape of Borneo rain forest. The two protagonists, Garett and Aidan, are characterized with such vivacity that it is impossible for the reader not to like them. They differ from a stereotypical couple of a romantic hero and heroine, as they are more true to life and have depth of character. The novel combines mystery and horror with romance, a romance which is unusual and unique. The plot line depicting the attraction of opposites is effectively used to arrest the attention of the reader. The fast-paced and highly dramatic plot maintains suspense till the very end, making this piece of writing extremely readable.

I received a free copy of this novel in exchange for my honest review. Garrett Cole, a sexy, smart, strong female entomologist. She leads her first expedition to Borneo with her group of misfit scientists. Their guide leaves them for a few hours telling Garrett where to meet him, he doesn’t arrive. The group believes headhunters are a thing of the past, only to be read in history books, so imagine their shock when they find Malcolm, their guide, washed ashore, headless! They’ve decided to follow the river and getting pushed away from it into the thick jungle. Aidan, the sexy Nordic, in a loincloth I might add, finds them (Can you say Tarzan?) There’s an instant connection between Aidian and Garrett. But seriously, who wouldn’t, he’s a sexy guy in a loincloth! I loved this mystery, there are so many possible scenarios that could have led to Malcolm’s death, the truth was quite a surprise and not something I had expected. The sexual tension between Garrett and Aidan was just crazy. She was so independent and tried to fight the inevitable. This was quite the story, one that I thoroughly enjoyed. I appreciated the fact that the romance wasn’t the main focus of the book, the mystery was. It was interesting the mix of characters that truly had their own unique quirks. A great relaxing read!

Garrett is finally getting to do what she has always wanted to do. Lead a crew on a scientif excursion in the Borneo rain forest. She thinks it will go smootly and they all will get to explore and hopefully find a new bug. Things quickly go bad when they find their guide killed and beheaded. Even tho she is shaken she has to hold it together and try to get her team to safety even if all they want to do is fight with each other. They soon become lost and night is closing in on the rain forest. Aiden finds them and follows them. He is looking for hunter who are killing monkeys and comes across the team and the body. While he is no stranger to the jungle he now lives in the city as a PI. When he reveals hisself to the team he at first acts like a savage as that is what Garrett thinks he is. Leading them to safety he tries to stay away from Garrett because he is attracted to her. As they journey to a villiage they soon come together but each ones past holds them back from trusting the other. Aiden is also trying to solve the mystery of who killed the guide. A mystery that may just shatter everything he knows. I liked Garrett as a character. She has had problems in the past but is good at her job. Given the chance she wants to prove to everyone including her dad she can do this. Things are falling apart around her but she holds it together to keep her team going. She shows so much strength in this book. She is attracted to Aiden but fights her feelings for him. Aiden is amazing. You can see how he would fit into the city life and his job as a PI but you can also see he is one with the rain forest. As one of the team calls him a Tarzan. I would go thru the forest with this man. He fights his feelings for Garrett cause he doesn't want a relationship he thinks he just wants sex but you can see he feels more for her than that. This book starts off with a bang as the body shows up. You really get to see Garrett's personality from the start as she keeps everyone going. The team is fighting with each other and you get to see a little about everyones personality by how they act and thru Aiden's eyes as he follows them. This adds a great part of the book seeing two different POV's. I really enjoyed reading this watching the chemistry between Garrett and Aiden play out, them trying to survive the forest and figure the mystery out. While I did guess who had done it I was still surprised on the ending. The author added some nice touches to make it a very good book. Anyone looking for a good love story with some mystery should read this. It made me want to visit the forest.

This was given to me as a review copy but this has had no influence on my opinion. I think Fatal Intent could be classified as a romantic suspense thriller, but I found it had a start with characters who were difficult for the reader to engage with. Garrett is as harsh as her name, and though we are are told she has been raised by her father with a love for insects we never see a soft side of her. Although Ian warns that she has 'issues' she is in the jungle and has witnessed brutality, at the same time apparently falling in love, but still Ryshia Kennie allows her to be closed off, and the reader has no emotion with which to connect to her. Although in the rainforest Aidan and Garrett's relationship seems built on lust, the author explores the fact the fear of losing someone can force heightened feelings to surface more readily, hence the rapid progression of their relationship. Yet, I did not feel that the chemistry between the two translated well from the narrative. Aidan is an interesting character, whose history was slightly more open than Garrett's. I found it amusing that the author would choose to dress him in a loincloth, but then this allowed for several Tarzan jokes which lightened the mood! Although we are aware of Aidan's Iban history and his place in the jungle I found him another emotionally closed off character; I therefore found myself feeling indifferent towards him, despite the events taking place. The mystery starts when the group of entomologists Garrett is leading finds their guide shot and beheaded. Ryshia Kennie successfully writes a story full os suspense, and whilst the author has made the reader aware of who is responsible for the crime, we wait with baited breath for them to be uncovered by the group. I found this an intelligent ploy Ryshia Kennie and very refreshing. I feel that Fatal Intent would be enjoyed by readers who like their romance with an extra twist, or who like their suspense with a little spice!!!
