Life Lessons

The first quote in this section is the first one I saved. It reflects my basic philosophy on life: accept responsibility for your actions but try everything, take chances, go places you've never been, meet people from all over the world, try to take advantage of every opportunity that comes your way, and most of all never throw in the towel. It's okay to make mistakes-that's how you learn. This is what I want to pass on to my boys. I feel the quotes and sayings in "Life Lessons" all speak to this, which is probably why I love them so much and why they have had such a powerful effect on my life.

Life is a great big canvas; throw
all the paint on it you can.
Danny Kaye

Think. Believe. Dream. Dare.
Credo of Walt Disney

For of all sad words of tongue and pen, the
saddest are these, "It might have been".
John Greenleaf Whittier

two evils is still choosing evil.
Jerry Garcia

Experience is a hard teacher because she
gives the test first, the lesson afterwards.
Vernon Sanders Law

Experience is a wonderful thing. It enables you to
recognize a mistake when you make it again.

In the end what we regret the most are the
chances we never took.
Frasier Crane

It's hard to beat a person
who never gives up.
Babe Ruth

but always think of what we miss.

The best things in life aren't things.

Finish every day and be done with it. You have done
what you could. Some blunders and absurdities no
doubt crept in; but get rid of them and forget them as
soon as you can. Tomorrow is a new day, and you
should never encumber its potentialities and invitation
with the dread of the past. You should not waste a
moment of today on the rottenness of yesterday.
Ralph Waldo Emerson

What you do speaks so loud that
I cannot hear what you say.
Ralph Waldo Emerson

Never borrow from the future. If you worry about
what may happen tomorrow and it doesn't happen,
you have worried in vain. Even if it does happen,
you have to worry twice.

Plan for tomorrow, but live for today.

Birthdays are good for you.
The more you have,
the longer you live.

Happiness is a choice.

We could learn a lot from crayons. Some are sharp,
some are pretty and some are dull. Some have weird
names, and all are different colors, but they all have
to live in the same box.

Differences only weaken us
when they divide us.
Archie Griffin

Be kind, for everyone you meet
is fighting a hard battle.

Don't cry because it's over,
smile because it happened.
Theodore Seuss Geisel "Dr. Seuss"

Be who you are and say what you feel,
because those who mind don't matter
and those who matter don't mind.
Dr. Seuss

It is not good to compare yourself to others.

Always remember that you're unique.
Just like everyone else.

The world is round and the place which may seem
like the end may also be only the beginning.
Ivy Baker Priest

today. It's already tomorrow in Australia.

that the highest appreciation is not to utter words,
but to live by them.
John F. Kennedy

We can't help everyone, but
everyone can help someone.
Ronald Reagan

Courage is almost a contradiction in terms.
It means a strong desire to live taking the
form of readiness to die.
G.K. Chesterton

Freedom is never free.

The greatest test of courage on earth
is to bear defeat without losing heart.
Robert G. Ingersoll

Life happens when you're busy making other plans.
John Lennon

Reality leaves a lot to the imagination.
John Lennon

Junk is something you've kept for years and
throw away two weeks before you need it.
Edward A Murphy

He who dies with the most toys is still dead.

If you tell the truth, you don't
have to remember anything.
Mark Twain

It's not the size of the dog in the fight,
but the size of the fight in the dog.
Mark Twain

Two people can look at the same
thing and see it differently.

What we see depends mainly
on what we look for.
Sir John Lubbock

It's never too late to be what
you might have been.
George Eliot

Determine what is to blame,
not who is to blame.

The measure of a life, after all, is
not its duration, but its donation.
Corrie ten Boom

whirling around a center of fear.

Worry does not empty tomorrow of its
sorrow; it empties today of its strength.
Corrie ten Boom

Luck is where opportunity meets preparation.

If one does not know to which port
one is sailing, no wind is favourable.
(In other words: If you don't know where
you are going, you will never get there.)

The happy man is content with his present lot,
no matter what it is, and is reconciled to his

Everyone is kneaded out of the same dough
but not baked in the same oven.

When you see something, you will remember it.
But not until you do something, will you understand it.

how strong she is until she gets in hot water.

Criticize me, and I may not like you.
Ignore me, and I may not forgive you.
Encourage me, and I may not forget you.
Sir William Arthur

The space between ideals and reality
is filled with a lot of hard work.

Laughter is like changing a baby's diaper.
It doesn't permanently solve any problems,

Only through experience of trial and suffering can
the soul be strengthened, ambition inspired,
and success achieved.
Helen Keller

Life can only be understood backwards;
but it must be lived forward.
Soren Kierkegaard

Absolute weight doesn't matter. It depends on how long you try to hold it. Holding a raised glass for a minute isn't a problem. If you hold it for an hour you'll have an ache in your arm. If you hold it for a day, you'll have to call an ambulance. In each case it's the same weight, but the longer you hold it, the heavier it becomes. The same is true for burdens. If we carry our burdens all the time, sooner or later, we won't be able to carry on. As with the water, you have to put it down for a while and rest before holding it again. So, before you return home each night, put the burden of work down. Don't carry it home. You can pick it up again tomorrow. Life is short. Enjoy it! Anonymous

We moved every couple of years while I was growing up, which helped instill in me a sense of adventure and willingness to try new things. As a result, I have lived in 9 states and 3 countries, and been to 45 states (including Alaska and Hawaii) and 20 countries (including Russia, East Germany and Czechoslovakia before the wall came down). At the time of this picture at Yosemite we lived in Northern California. On our move there, we were passing right by the Grand Canyon and my Dad didn't want to stop, thinking we'd be back by there again sometime. I convinced him to stop, which was good, because we never have gotten back there again as a family.

I spent the summer after graduation from high school in Berne, Switzerland as an AFS Exchange student. It was an honor to be chosen and was such a great experience. Before I had even left the States, I had met a couple hundred American kids from all over the country. My Swiss host family was wonderful and showed me so much, however, since I had only taken French and Berne is in the German speaking part of the country, we had to speak English. I decided then to learn German, so I could go back in college (which I did my Junior year).

I spent my Junior year of college abroad, near Nuremberg, Germany, through the University of Kansas. I was the first business student in the program. We lived in the foreign students dorm, which housed many German students too. I saw and learned so much that year. Many friendships were forged with people from all over the world. Barriers were broken and stereotypes were smashed as a result. I think there would be a lot less trouble in the world if everyone had an opportunity to do this at some point in their lives. This picture was taken on a trip to Prague, Czechoslovakia.

I had a railpass and used it every chance I got. A friend and I traveled for a month all over Europe between semesters. We would wake up in the morning and decide where we wanted to go next. We saw every place I'd ever dreamt of seeing. On a separate trip we even went to Moscow and Leningrad (now St. Petersberg again).

Faith, Family and Friendship

The quotes and sayings in this section, I feel help inspire the strength and extra confidence needed to strike out and do the things you've never done before, while at the same time still helping to keep you grounded in truth and values, so you don't end up going down the wrong path. I have learned over the years that I really don't have much control over what happens in my life (other than my own actions), but that doesn't mean that I can just go through life as a bystander. At the end of every situation if I can say to myself "I did everything I could do", I am satisfied. I think these quotes and sayings in "Faith, Family and Friendship" have helped me do that.

You must be the change you wish to see in the world. Mahatma Gandhi

When I despair, I remember that all through history the ways of truth and love have always won. There have been tyrants, and murderers, and for a time they can seem invincible, but in the end they always fall. Think of it ... always. Mahatma Gandhi

The Golden Rule is a general moral principle found in virtually all religions and cultures: "Love your neighbor as yourself" (Moses); "Do unto others as you would have them do to you" popularly rephrased as "Treat others as you want to be treated" (Jesus); "What you do not want others to do to you, do not do to others" (Confucius); "What is hateful to you, do not to your fellow man" (Jewish sage Hillel)

All that we are is a result of what we have thought. The mind is everything. What we think, we become. Buddha

Each morning as you wake, there is a new opportunity ... God does not tell you what He is going to do next ... A life of faith is not a life of one glorious mountain top experience after another, but it is a life of day-in and day-out consistency, a life of walking without fainting. Living a life of faith means never knowing where you are being led. But it does mean knowing the One who is leading. Oswald Chambers

When it is a question of God's Almighty Spirit, never say "I can't". Oswald Chambers

What good is it to gain the whole world and yet forfeit your soul. Mark 8:36

Open arms to change, but don't let go of your values. Dalai Lama

Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God. 2 Corinthians 1:3-4

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through Him. John 3:16-17

When there is nothing left but God, that is when you find out that God is all you need. Anonymous

Before God we are all equally wise—and equally foolish. Albert Einstein

This will be a better world when the power of love replaces the love of power! Anonymous

The glory of friendship is not the outstretched hand, nor the kindly smile, nor the joy of companionship; it is the spiritual inspiration that comes to one when he discovers that someone else believes in him and is willing to trust him. Ralph Waldo Emerson

All mothers are working mothers. Anonymous

All great change in America begins at the dinner table. Ronald Reagan

God always gives His best to those who leave the choice with Him. Jim Elliot

Therefore, do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own. Matthew 6:34

You must do whatever you say you will do. Deuteronomy 23:23

Life takes its own turns, makes its own demands, writes its own story, and along the way, we start to realize we are not the author. We begin to understand that life is ours to live but not to waste and that the greatest rewards are found in the commitments we make with our whole hearts-to the people we love and to the causes that earn our sacrifice. George W. Bush
