Overview

Fear Report by Elizabeth Massie

The Fear Report was originally published by Bloodletting Press in 2004. It was a small edition (326 copies), so this really is its first exposure to a mass audience. This collection contains her first short story “The Whittler” (1984). Her story “Stephen” (included in this collection) won the Bram Stoker Award in 1991. It was also nominated for a World Fantasy Award and finished #28 in the Locus Poll, which includes Horror, Science Fiction and Fantasy. In addition to the contents of that book, this edition contains a new story (“October 19, After the Asters Died”) and an older story not in the Bloodletting edition (“Fear of Fish”).

Massie's stories are noted for their gritty realism. Her characters are well-drawn and recognizable. Complex human emotions and situations are presented in a deceptively simple prose.
