Feelin' out of Time

Brian Molnar might be described as a contemporary troubadour on Feelin' out of Time, a cross between a folkie like Arlo Guthrie and a bare-bones alternative country outfit. That Molnar's vocals remind one of Guthrie, and that his lyrical overflow reminds one of Bob Dylan, increases the impression that he's a rustic folkie from days gone by (or a contemporary folkie who prefers the music of the past). These elements, along with down-to-earth arrangements, work very well on the opener, "I Knew I'd See You Again." What "makes" the arrangement are Ryan Patrick's dobro work and Maria Woodford's backing vocals. These elements are dropped into a simple set-up, quiet drums, acoustic guitar, and bass, and they inject the song with a sweet melancholy. There's also a lovely hook on the song's chorus that helps center the whole affair. Molnar continues to use similar arrangements across the expanse of Feelin' out of Time though the effects are less stunning than the opener. The title cut is nearly five minutes, and, taken at a sluggish pace, feels too long. Even when songs like "Darkness" are shorter, the slow to medium pacing works like a drag on much of Feelin' out of Time. Molnar is a good singer and the arrangements on Feelin' out of Time are well done, but too much of the material blends together.
