Nothing makes a new school suck worse than discovering the guy you're in love with is your prophesied nemesis.

Nothing makes a new school suck worse than discovering the guy you're in love with is your prophesied nemesis.
Ari is the most powerful flame-throwing sorceress ever, and her people's last hope in an ancient war. But she's also a seventeen-year-old girl, and in her free, not-hunting-nemesis times, she jumps from school to school, trying to figure out regular people her own age and pretending she'll get the chance to graduate.
Shane lives a double life. He goes to school and masters the art of popularity, hiding the fact that he has a fate with a slim chance of his survival. He's destined to end a 300 year-old war by killing or being killed. He knows he's hunted by a powerful enemy who's not afraid to die. Only problem? He has no idea who that enemy is.
When Ari shows up at Shane's school, angry and sullen and determined to keep him at arm's reach, neither of them realize they are supposed to be killing each other, not fall-ing in love. Until Ari does realize it, and she almost dies - by Shane's hand.

Meet the Author

Wendy Knight was born and raised in Utah by a wonderful family who spoiled her rotten because she was the baby. Now she spends her time driving her husband crazy with her many eccentricities (no water after five, terror when faced with a live phone call, etcetera, etcetera). She also enjoys chasing her three adorable kids, playing tennis, watching football, reading, and hiking. Camping is also big: her family is slowly working toward a goal of seeing all the National Parks in the U.S.
You can usually find her with at least one Pepsi nearby, wearing ridiculously high heels for whatever the occasion may be. And if everything works out just right, she will also be writing.

This book was an unexpectedly captivating and thought-provoking tale. This isn't the sort of book I normally read--I'm a cozy mystery and non-fiction reader--but everyone I know is reading it, so I bought a copy, not really sure what to expect. By yesterday, I was prepared to contact the author to tell her she'd have to fly in and do my chores and writing because I was too busy worrying about Ari to take care of them myself. I read and read and read, unable to put the book down. The author is a brilliant plotter and her characters have unusual depth. Despite a seemingly impossible storyline, every bit of it was believable, from Ari's desperate need to protect herself from pain by not making friends lest she have to kill them later (or even just move) to Shane's unexpected attraction to a loner seemingly unlike him. By the time he finds out they are more alike than he could imagine--trained from childhood to be the Prodigy and to kill the Prodigy on the opposing side--the ways they each choose to handle the realization that the person they've fallen in love with is the person they've been trained to kill holds the reader spellbound. Even minor characters come to life in this fast-moving study of teenagers in a hopeless situation. Although many have billed it as a teen romantic fantasy, I found it was much deeper than that, with thoughtful explorations into issues of agency, war, and the role of choice and consequence playing out in this powerful story.

It is really difficult to put into words how much I loved this book. I have been raving about it since it came out. I had a copy from the author but never got it read because my tablet was abducted by the Angry Birds obsessed :) Once I sat down and started reading it, though, I couldn't put it down. As it is now, waiting for book #2, I am having Ari and Shane withdrawals!!  So why did I love this book so much? Because of the characters. At the beginning of the book, Nevaeh was my favorite character simply because she was so spunky and adorable! I loved her. As the book progressed, though, I got wrapped up in the drama between Shane and Ari. How they were both clashing because they were clearly attracted but were denying it. I loved it! So much amazing drama! Toward the end of the book, my favorite character had switched to Will, Ari's brother. It was obvious how much he loved Ari and he was always trying to protect her. Their relationship is one of my favorites throughout the entire book. Well, after Ari and Shane :) I really enjoyed this book and recommend it to everyone! I can't wait until the next book comes out :)

The relationship between Ari and Shane is so far from the typical made-for-each-other nonsense that it might as well be in another universe.   It's a refreshing change to find an author who's willing to tackle an ancient-hate story, and turn it into a love story. This book is well written, well plotted, and I can't wait for the next one! Lauren Ritz

Why in the world would anyone not love this book.. i dont know.. But Ill tell you what.. this book is absolutely incredible.. the way Ari.. a ridiculously tall, yet very stubborn, and a bit of a traveler, i guess you could say... is the only hope in ending a life long war for her people and Shane.. the hottest boy in school is who could potentialy no only ..end but create a big problem in Ari's life. Ill tell you what this is defiantly a page turner, and you won't regret it!

A feud story like no other, where destiny conspires against love and the lovers are destined to kill each other. A-MAZE-ING.  I loved it. I'm adding to the array of Knight fans (and the anonymous 1 star review was obviously drunk) as I wait for the next one.  Can't wait to see how she wraps up this impossible romance.

I bought this book, which is saying a lot right there. I don't buy a lot of books these days. However, a great friend on facebook recommended this one and the cover and blurb immediately caught my eye. I sat down in the evening planning on reading a few pages before bed...and didn't stop. Yes, it's one of THOSE books. There isn't anything I didn't like about it. The characters are all well defined and unique, and likable. Ari and Shane had a growing relationship.. not a OMGyouaremysoulmateandIloveyouevenifIjustmetyou love. Awesome battle scenes, strong female lead, wonderful supporting characters, great plot and story. Overall a very engaging and fun read. My only problem is that it ended and there are more books in the series. I rather want to timewarp ahead to the future so I can read them now!

Ari isn't your typical teenage girl. Going off into battles, shooting red flames at her family's enemies, and switching schools when it gets too dangerous. Sounds awesome, right?  It is! I loved the imagery in this book. From the too-pink comforter on her roommate's bed, to the amazing battle scenes. I could feel myself there throughout the whole book. I liked that while she had the rich, snobby girl, Brittany, in her book, she wasn't the main villain. She was a side story that I loved. I could hear her shrieks as she went after Ari for "stealing" her man. Shane, her nemesis is the kind of guy every girl wants—including Ari. It's too bad she felt she couldn't get involved because she never knew when she would have to leave again. I love the relationship that is built there. Hunter's disapproval adds to the spiciness of the relationship. It's an overall great story that I would highly recommend.

Beginning started kinda slow but quickly picked up and pulled me into the new world of magic and war. This story is exciting and compelling look into a teenage girl with a less than normal life. I love the connections she makes and the people that help her to be the woman you can see her becoming. Looking forward to the next story in this series.

Getting a free week on Scribd yesterday and in desperate need of a good book I browsed through the recommended book shelf and found this book. After reading the description my curiosity was piqued so I started reading around noon and when I put my Nook down around eight o'clock last night, hungrily reading each word until the last page I was amazed. Not only did I fall in love with Ari and Shane but also Hunter, Livi, Nevaeh, Will and Charity. If it were possible to have book best friends I would immediately choose Charity because she is such a loving, well-rounded character, like someone you could meet any day of the week in every day life and that is something I've disappointedly noticed lately is lacking in the other stories I've read. It's hard to connect with a character if their behavior is nowhere near the way people in real life act. Yes, that's part of the draw to fiction but some authors do it to excess and to me that's just an immediate turn off to where I just go looking for a new, more interesting story. Today I am reading the second book in the series and I am just as happy and engrossed in it as I was the first. I am happily and sadly devouring each page much like yesterday, loving the developing relationship between Ari and Shane but sad that I'm nearing the end of the book. Not wanting to ruin the ending I have not peeked to see if it's only a two book series but I did find the short stories attached to this series so at least there is that to tide me over until my next great book find. Even though they were free for me to read I would have gladly paid for each book because this author is just amazingly talented and I can't wait to read every other book she writes.
