Shänne Sands stands almost alone of the post-war British poets as still retaining a link to the Romantics and rejecting the Ezra Pound school of shortening English sentences to facsimiles of Chinese. Highly regarded by a small group of intellectuals her work exceeds the feminism of Plath by being more honest, and pole-vaults over Larkin and his ilk by being richer in feeling and experience. She is often not easy to read but she is necessary.
