I found this author many years ago and decided to read his works again. I think any of his books would be great for young people in your family or the young at heart.

Have you been to Maine? This story will take you back there so you can feel the granite rocks again, taste the 'straw'bries', and mayhaps you will hear the huge trees fall in the snowy woods, and remember the conifered islands: round, quiet, peaceful as you watch from the boat. So you haven't been to Maine? Read it anyway. Ralph Moody will take you all the way from Colorado to Maine--just go. Read it for the incredible characters, and know again the power of family--and land--to rile, support, grieve, and change us. Moody says much in these 300+ pages, but it is the unsaid you will remember.

I first discovered the Ralph Moody series as a young boy in my grade school library, where I read Little Britches. I quickly discovered three other titles in the series, including The Fields of Home. It became my favorite because of my own boyhood experiences on and around farms and with farm families. If you have any ties to farming in your family's past, or you simply have an interest in what living on a 'family farm' was like in the early 20th century in America, this is a must read. If you (or someone close to you) have ever felt that tug, that bond with with the land that can be a defining force, this book will call forth that feeling again. Your heart will beat faster and, possibly, your eyes will moisten a little, as you read about Mr. Moody's adventures on his grandfather's farm and recall your own experiences. Of course, as with all the titles in the Ralph Moody series, kids can benefit tremendously reading about a real life example of the core values and virtues that laid the sound foundation of America and its civil society of that earlier time.

This is my favorite book in the Ralph Moody Series. The Fields of Home has heart-felt variety of old-fashioned ethics like honesty, hard work, and patience, and offers a special insight to family relationships.
