Edwin C. Bearss is a famous National Park Service Civil War expert and tour guide. This book collects his lectures about famous battles of the war. It omits as many key engagements as it covers. (Of course, to cover every conflict would mean a thousand page book.) Bearss writes as if he was standing in front of you at Gettysburg or the Wilderness pointing out landmarks and telling human interest stories. This has drawbacks; sometimes it seems as if this would be better as an audio-book. I found it interesting but not essential.
