Fighting with Destiny is a coming-of-age story-for both the author and for modern India Dr. Suryadevara Basavaiah, PhD, was born in the village of Munnaluru in India in the late 1930s. (He does not know the exact date!) The author believes his family first arrived in this region around 1790, and they continued to work the land as they had for years. He provides a vivid account of agricultural life on the shores of the Krishna River, five miles from the nearest paved road. The odds of a person in rural India living to adulthood were fifty-fifty. The odds of that person receiving an education were one in ten. And yet, against these odds, Basavaiah was able to become educated, first through itinerate teachers, then by braving a raging river to attend high school, then in engineering college in India, and ultimately through advanced degrees in the United States.
Though he was trained as an engineer, Basavaiah is an elegant narrator of thousands of years of Indian history and mythology, and he gives an eyewitness account of the growing pains of a fledgling democracy beset with ethnic and political tensions that strives to become a great and modern nation.
