PreS-Gr 1-Using brightly colored photographs with simple, mostly one-word labels, these two board books teach the basic mathematical concepts of size and shape. Each book encourages children to apply the concept being taught. For example, the books ask children to select the two (of three) apples that are the same size or to find the star that can be eaten. Originally published by Dorling Kindersley, these books employ a large quantity of photographs, and the items pictured-animals, food, clothing, plants-have been carefully selected for their appeal to the target audience. A few of the translated labels may seem unusual or strange to the North American audience-a football marked balon instead of pelota or futbol, or plain tortilla chips marked nachos. Even so, these titles are designed to draw in beginning learners and will do so successfully. Recommended for bookstores and libraries.
