This multi- disc set boasts a number of unexpected treats one does not normally associate with such a greatest hits survey. Here are just a few examples: Enduring Love (Jeremy Sams); Romeo and Juliet (Craig Armstrong); Ladies In Lavender (Nigel Hess); Wallace and Gromit (Julian Nott); Stage Beauty (George Fenton); Captain Corelli’s Mandolin (Stephen Warbeck), Pride and Prejudice (Dario Marianelli) With the exception of Jaws (hopelessly eviscerated), the arrangements range from good to superb. There are a total of 50 tracks clocking in at 223 minutes. The playing of the RPO, old hands at this type of repertoire, is what one would expect: eloquent and committed. The sonics are lush, airy and precisely detailed. The packaging is adequate. So on balance, worth considering if only for its enterprising approach to programming. Clearly not the greatest film music of all time as it is billed, but still a worthy endeavor.
