This valuable book was originally published in 2014, and this edition presents the most up-to-date information on healthcare economics and financing from the perspective of nursing practice and the healthcare system.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) students with the knowledge and skills essential to practice at the doctoral level. The book describes the skills needed to strategically anticipate changes in the healthcare marketplace in a user-friendly context for these students. These objectives are in keeping with the Institute of Medicine 2008 report that underscores the importance of nurses practicing to their fullest potential.
Audience: The audience is DNP students, but both student and current DNPs will benefit from the book. The authors are clearly well versed in the world of healthcare finance. Each of the contributors presents specific information in their area of expertise in healthcare finance.
Features: The book is well organized and structured. Readers do not need to have a degree in finance to be able to understand the issues. The initial portion of the book explains reimbursement and healthcare insurance issues. The book goes on to describe the skills necessary to manage budgets in the healthcare arena. It then explores the ethical and financial issues as they relate to patients, providers, and healthcare systems. The final section discusses exploring entrepreneurship and positioning oneself as the future of healthcare unfolds.
Assessment: Healthcare finance and business management are intimidating topics for most DNP nurses. This resource does a wonderful job of addressing the essential components of these topics in language that is familiar and understandable. It provides readers with the skills to develop a business plan, create a budget, and embark on an entrepreneurial adventure.
