Dan Sumerel has a real hit on his hands. It¿s self-published and not professionally edited, but we all know that content is king, and Dan has serious, useful and invaluable content here. I attended a Sumerel Training Systems Clinic in Virginia and I watched the remarkable things Dan taught owners to do with apparently uncontrollable horses. It was not a set up, as clinic attendees brought their own horses. Dan gave a short demo, and then coached the owners in the use of his techniques while sitting in a chair outside the round pen. He even coached a young man with cerebral palsy as the boy successfully worked the horse around the pen. In less than thirty minutes the animal was following the boy around like a puppy dog. In this wonderful book, Dan relates the ways he developed his common sense horse handling techniques while trying to learn to manage an incorrigible Arab named Sunny. He relates how the horse ran away with him 43 times regardless of the type of bit he used, and how that led to his revelation that the bit serves no good purpose, and his decision to stop using bits altogether. Sumerel learned and tells the reader about the social behavior of the horse within the herd, the concept of The Alpha Horse, and how to use this concept to control the movement of horse¿s body. By his means, the handler becomes alpha to the horse and the animal then agrees to submit to the handler. Sumerel achieves results without fatiguing the horse, striking the horse or even touching or speaking a single word to the animal. Best of all, Sumerel tells his story and relates his techniques and philosophy with warmth, passion and humor. This book is a fine read and it transcends the How To¿ Horse Training genre.

This is a wonderful book. It is easy and fun to read. Dan has found a way to make the roundpen and horse communication easy to understand. Other trainers are very good but Dan is a talented teacher. A must read for horse owners and lovers.
