Finding treasure Gold is a collection of poems by Stepanka Summer. Weaving through each season, spring to fall, the poems are full of beauty, loos, pain, childhood, and much more. Each poem is filled with emotion that takes you on a little journey of self-exploration. While the poems in this book are Cleary very personal to the author, dealing with her trauma’s struggles, cancer diagnoses, and more, she does an exquisite job of pulling the reader in so that they can connect with shared experiences. The poems are mostly fairly short, averaging half a page apiece, and many are paired with black and white photographs which bring some of the imagery to life. There were several things about this collection that made it unique to me. I liked the amount of blank space that Summer uses throughout the collection. Three-line poems are given full pages so that they have the space to give impact to the reader. I also liked the minimal punctuation and lack of capital letters. Each poem is made to feel more personal, a simple and humble note trying to express pain and suffering. The poems range in exact theme, but all come together in exploring struggles that are both personal and collective. I felt very connected to many of the poems and found that so many lines packed hard punches in emotion and imagery. The poems are soft and subtle but powerful. I greatly enjoyed this collection of poems and would highly recommend it.
