Love is a battlefield -- and only the strong survive.
Shunning his Ivy League education and the empire that was his birthright, Damian Cavallo found his place in New York City's criminal underworld after the fall of the Syndicate. Reclusive and angry, he works alone -- until crime lord Nico Vitale makes a compelling argument for the new organization's far-reaching power. After hearing Nico out, Damian is willing to consider the possibility of leading the New York territory.
There's just one problem; he isn't the only one who wants it.
Aria Fiore didn't choose a life of crime -- it chose her.
Raised by her dangerously unbalanced brother, Primo, after the death of their parents, Aria had no choice but to follow him into a life of crime. She finds happiness working in the city's community garden but can't help wondering if she'll ever get the chance to choose something for herself. Then Damian Cavallo appears -- hot, brooding, and demanding Primo forfeit the New York territory. Aria has no love for the business, but even the gorgeous criminal can't shake her loyalty to her brother.
As the rivalry becomes more and more deadly, Primo's first in command is only too happy to goad him into reckless action. Desperate to save her brother, Aria forges an alliance with Damian that quickly turns into undeniable passion. Now she's forced to consider the most unlikely of possibilities:
She is in love with Damian Cavallo -- and her real enemy is much closer to home.

Michelle St. James has mastered the art of writing about men who operate in the shadow world, the ones responsible for keeping the wheels turning in ways that most of us choose not to see. In FIRE WITH FIRE, Michelle introduces us to Damian Cavallo, the man chosen by the members of the worldwide Syndicate to help bring New York back into the family. Like others of Michelle's men, Damian has a complicated past. Determined to right the wrongs perpetrated by his father, he lives a powerful and solitary life. With the dissolution of the New York Syndicate, many vie for their piece of the city, but only one man can ultimately be called boss, and Damian is just the man to do it. Aria Fiore wants nothing to do with the mafia life. Caught in the crossfire of the rivalry between her brother and Damian, she only knows that she feels an inexplicable and fierce pull towards the man that is her brother's sworn enemy. When war becomes inevitable, Aria makes the only choice that she can. FIRE WITH FIRE is an excellent start to a new series, and one that I enjoyed very much. The characters are well written, and the connection between Damian and Aria is strong and tangible. I may be one of the few readers that doesn't mind a cliffhanger (yes, that's as much a spoiler as you'll get from me), because it just means that there's more to look forward to. I can't wait to see what's ahead for Damian and Aria, and recommend this 4.5-star read for fans of Michelle and those that like a good mafia read.
Fire with Fire is the first of the NY Syndicate series. It's about a forbidden love, gaining territory of NY, and the result of people caught in the crossfire of a mafia war. Damian and Aria weren't suppose to fall in love, after all they are enemies. Damian chose a life in the mafia, Aria had no other choice but be part of the mafia life her brother dragged her into. The Syndicate want Damian to join them, they need a man with Damian's talents to run NY. In order to get control he has to get rid of his competition, but what happens when he gets an eye on Fiore's sister Aria, well he knows that he has to do everything in his power to protect her. Aria has to choose the life that she has only known, or a life with Damian that excites her in every way. However, if Aria chooses Damian she will be betraying her brother, but he is so unstable that she knows the only choice she has is to be with Damian. Just as things seem to be simmering down an Aria and Damian have found their groove, a threat creeps in to destroy their happiness. Who is responsible for the attack on Aria and Damian? Will Damian be able to save Aria before it is too late? I really enjoyed his book. Michelle St. James is an extrodinary writer and she is able to make the words on th page come to life, as if it's you living them. Well done Michelle, well done.
