Written by experts, historians, fire chiefs, and officers, the book features first-hand accounts of courage in the face of danger; essays on urban and wildland firefighting; a look at training, trucks, and apparatus; and an overview of the history of U.S. fire departments, beginning with Ben Franklin’s Union Fire Company in Philadelphia in 1736. Also included is information on volunteering, search and rescue, emergency medical services, and response to terrorism. Firefighters enables the history of America's bravest profession to be cherished permanently in a handsome package that all firefighters will be proud to own and display. This book will be read again and again by past and present firefighters, their families and friends, and by everyone interested in stories of bravery. Between the meticulous groupings of the photographs, many of them as beautiful as they are harrowing, and the dyed-in-the-wool devotion of the essays, written almost entirely by professionals in the field, a brilliant mosaic emerges. Firefighters reveals one basic idea: that the culture, the work, and the symbolism of firefighting are essential to American life.

My son is a volunteer fire-fighter and we bought this for him for Christmas. He loved it. He sat right down and started going through it before he even finished opening the rest of his gifts.

My husband was a volunteer firefighter for many, many years. He was overjoyed when our sons gave him this book for Father's Day. Beyond the factual information and history, this book captures the heart of this brave profession. You will get an insiders look at the firefighter's world and gain a new appreciation for what these dedicated men and women lay on the line every time they answer the alarm. I know this book will become a family treasure!

This book is chock full of fireman, firetruck, fire house and fire fighting history. I am not a fireman, but reccomend this reading for anyone interested in the fire fighting field. I have family members that have been in the firefighting business for years and did not know 1/4 of the information dished out in this book. I am glad I read it.

I was a firefighter for many years and have read many 'Bargain Books' on firefighting. This book put out by the authors and the National Fire Academy is supberb reading, not to mention just to sit down in front of your fireplace on a winters eve with a good cup of coffee with your children to let them see up front what these American Heroe's go through every day and the stressors they have on the job. Not to mention if they have some one in their family whose job it is to protect life first and then property on a daily basis. Also shows that firefighters have a family away from home as well as their on loved ones they leave at home and hope to make it back for another day with their loved one's.
