Overview

Fireflies by PS Bartlett

Dr. Owen Whelan and his wife Sarah have seven bright and expressive children. However, one of them is very unique; he's been followed since birth by lost souls. However peculiar Ennis Whelan has been for the first six years of his life, not until the day he found the bird did the degree of his strangeness become so tangible. When Ennis also reveals the gift of sight, he questions his father about visions of his past, including his voyage to America in 1844. Owen prayed he'd never have to share those tragic memories but he will share them, when he realizes he has no choice. Ennis' life depends on it.

About the Author

I was born on Valentine's Day a long, long time ago in South Baltimore, Maryland, less than a mile from Fort McHenry and Federal Hill. I'm a very simple person. I love my life and am always striving to make it better for myself and my family.
I write, I draw and I work full-time as a sales and marketing office manager herding cats - I mean taking care of a loveable group of sales people all day long. I also paint beautiful watercolors with my two and a half year old granddaughter.
I've been married for nearly 19 years and together we have two sons and a daughter.
I'd call myself a football fan but I mostly only watch my home team, the Baltimore Ravens.
I love super heroes and Superman has been my favorite since I was a little girl. June 2013 cannot get here soon enough for me.
I'm fascinated with anything paranormal and have been since I was a little girl and would sneak into my parent's room almost every night to sit on the end of their bed and watch the "kids playing" as I explained it to them.
I finished my debut novel "Fireflies" in about six weeks, over the summer of 2012. Needless to say I don't sleep much. After several rounds of edits, feedback and more edits, I began submitting "Fireflies" to literary agents and publishers in groups of five at a time. Through my diligent efforts, persistence and fabulous luck, I am blessed to now be a part GMTA Publishing's fold and look forward to releasing my first novel soon!
I've been reading everything I can get my eyes on as to how this whole process works and I confess that I still don't understand it and the social media aspect is just as perplexing. However, now I have the guidance and support of GMTA to help me succeed at doing what I love and I've told myself to above all, just keep writing.
I'm so excited because I'm about 30,000 words into my second novel which I have already begun to map out a sequel to. I don't even know where these thoughts came from but I've never looked a gift horse in the mouth that hasn't kicked the crap out of me, so I place my hands on the keyboard and just let go.

Loving this book so far! I was born and raised in the Scranton/Wilkesbarre area of the Pocono Mountains - very easy for the 'mind movie' to play as I'm reading this book. I am delighted for this first time out of the gate author - and am looking forward to more of her work!

This is a great read. I felt as though I lived with this family, feeling the love they had for one another. I felt that I was learning to cope with the gifts of Ennis and celebrating them with him. I could even see the landscape as they would have seen them. You will find that it won't take long to finish this book as you won't put it down until it's finished. Very much looking forward to the next book written by P.S. Bartlett.

I thoroughly enjoyed this story. From the very first page you begin a journey back in time to an old victorian farmhouse, filled with children, love and as with all families, secrets. The youngest of the children has a big secret of his own but as soon as you open the book, his secret begins to emerge and become visible. His older sister’s fear and logic tell her to deny her own eyes, until there's no way to deny it. When he starts to heal people, the family gathers around to protect him. However, this is not the whole story. There are coming of age stories within the story of love, pain and complete joy! You'll find yourself pulled right down at the dinner table next to them and feel like one of the family. If you want to be swept away and enjoy feeling completely invested in a story, love the characters and wish you could jump into the book, Fireflies is the book for you. I highly recommend this hidden jewel of a story!

I have read many many books in my life... and only on one hand can I count the stories.. that made me completely forget where I was as I read them. Fireflies is at the top of that list. I felt that I was in the 1800's... and was happy to be there. I could feel the Whelan wood porch beneath my feet and smell the air that surrounded it. The Whelan family has become my family. I want to know what happens next in their lives... It was the most inspiring, love-filled, family oriented page turner of my life. I hope that Peggy keeps writing... for to be a part of her imagination and not even realize it, was an outstanding realization and beautiful experience. I have to admit... as I got near the end of the book.... I was so involved with these characters... that I HAD put the book down. I didn't want the story to end... EVER. BUT all good stories must have an ending... and I must say... as I sat and sobbed with emotion... it made me want to go back to page one... and start reading it all over again. I have only had five books that have made me feel that way out of hundreds. I highly recommend this story for ALL AGES: for libraries, and children, and grown ups. I would love to see it become a movie. My only regret right now... is that I have to wait for PS BARTLETT to release her next work of art. OUTSTANDING. 6 OUT OF 5 STARS. I can't wait to read it to my grandchildren... most importantly, I know they will read it to theirs. (review by Laura Leichling)

I think this is an exceptional book! It's not from a genre I would normally read, but it was highly recommended and I was interested in reading it. I was not disappointed. It was well-written, kept my interest the entire way through. I really cannot imagine why anyone would give this a poor review. It is clean, appropriate for a variety of ages. I normally am able to figure out endings, but there were several instances where I was unexpectedly and pleasantly surprised by the outcome. I love the way you are able to connect to the characters, feel the love, and ponder the emotions and wonder throughout the story. I hope there is a sequel, and look forward to reading more from this author. I think this book would make a great movie!

My name is PS Bartlett and I am the author of this book. I have made several requests to have the obvious non-reviews which a person who is UNFORTUNATELY known to me has posted on this page, removed by B&N but sadly, here they stay. First of all, the anonymity of the internet is a dangerous but powerful thing - to fools. Anyone who comes to a web site to purchase a book and who is an actual avid reader will not take these personal bashings seriously. However, there is always the chance that someone will read these posts and turn away from my book, which in turn will deprive me of a few dollars in royalties but even worse, deprive them of the experience of reading my story and making their own judgments. Secondly, I have not paid GMTA or anyone else to publish my book. That is a complete lie. GMTA Literary, LLC is a legitimate independent publisher who although still in their early days of publishing, go above and beyond to assist new writers such as myself and although they may not have the budget of some larger and more established publishers, they work their tail feathers off for their writers and do not deserve to be dragged into these jealous attacks. Last but not least, negative reviews are a fact of life to every author. We take the bad with the good and although it stings for a minute, we all understand that our work may not be everyone’s cup of tea. After all, some people prefer coffee or even scotch. The truth is, I followed my dreams. I chased them down, tied them up with a bow and handed them to the world. I didn’t do it for fame or fortune. I didn’t do it to make an already jealous and bitter person even more so. I did it for myself because I deserved to follow my dreams and I worked HARD to get here. If you allow this person to turn you away from a story that you may love forever or throw down after the first five pages, you are giving her exactly what she wants. I trust in the fact that people who read are dreamers as well and travelers and lovers and fighters. I can’t promise you that you’ll fall in love with this story or that you’ll get in a chapter or two and then delete it from your Nook. That is for you to decide but I welcome your feedback, both good and bad because every day that I wake up, I am just GRATEFUL to be here with my story for you to read and I’m thankful I’ve been so blessed just to be ME. Thank you, PS Bartlett

This book is so AMAZING!!! Fireflies is beautiful, full of detail and flooding with imagery. I found this book Hypnotizing, as well as inspirational. I never put it down. This new and upcoming author has some very rare, real natural talent. Her writing is beautiful and i cant wait for her next book..... Wonderful read!!!. In my opinion, everyone who is rating this book a one star read, either didn't understand it, because they didn't really read it. OR, they are just jealous of this woman's amazing natural talent.

Ennis was holding a small still bird, until a breeze ruffled his hair and it flew away. He was six years old and his life was about to change. His mother tended to baby him as he was nearly lost at birth, small and not breathing for what felt like the longest time. His Da was a doctor, his brothers and sisters growing healthy and strong. Theirs is a happy family. His sister Teagan was the first to notice that he was changing, starting to be able to do things no person should be able to do. What follows is a charming, riveting story of hidden secrets, dangers, and families. Of lives changed and lives saved. Of Angels and spirits and human frailties. This is a story that reaches back to Ireland and forward to a future full of possibilities. You will find yourself caught up in it's spell, like being surrounded by fireflies to delight and entrance you.

Great historical fantasy! * I received a complimentary copy of this through NetGalley for review, and all opinions are my own. I love reading books that have a bit a paranormal or super-natural elements in them. Fireflies was a story I got totally caught up in, and I loved just about everything about it. When I started reading this, I thought it was going to be a historical novel, then a paranormal, then maybe a religious story. What I got was all of the above and then some. While the story revolves around the youngest child, Ennis, and his 'special gift', we also get to know a bit about all the family members, including a glimpse into the past of Dr. Whelan and his wife, Ennis' parents, before they immigrated to America. It didn't take long to feel like you were part of the family. There was plenty of twist and turns, plenty of action, sweet romances as well as some disturbing acts, based on the time period. I felt like I was on an emotional roller coaster, laughing one minute, crying the next. And the ending, well, I wasn't prepared for it at all, and it was quite a surprise. My only complaint was the transition from the past-present to the flashback of the past. It was a bit confusing at first, but I quickly was able to figure out what was happening. I loved this story and would recommend it to anyone who wants something a bit different in historical fiction. It's a clean, enjoyable read and does have some religious references in it, but it's not preachy.

And now for something completely different... A wonderfully magical and surprisingly addictive read!  From the very first chapter I was in love with this family and their community.  I could have read it straight through if it weren't for taking care of my own family.  Nicely sprinkled twists and surprises throughout.   I look forward to Ms. Bartlett's next novel.
