Days later, Neva wakes up in the hospital as Travis speeds out of town. But he risks everything to turn back and kidnap her, knowing the approaching full moon will put everyone in jeopardy. Soon Travis and Neva go on the run together, desperate to escape the police…and far darker forces.

Neva’s sinister sire, Meredith de la Ronde, vows to find her pack’s runaway. And when she does, Neva will join their murderous ranks…or die.

This is the first book in a new series by Dani Harper. I have seen other books by the author, but hadn't read anything by her as yet.  So when I saw the book available on Netgalley, I gave it a try.  To be honest, this book had a very slow start for me.  I kept starting it and putting it down.  It wasn't until about chapter 5 or 6 that I really got into it. After that it got much better and by the half way point I was fully invested and eager to find out where the story was going to go.   We first meet Neva Ross as she is walking through the woods looking for just the right spot to commit suicide.  She is afraid of the monster inside her that she knows will be coming soon.  Neva figures that this is the only way to keep others safe from the monster that she will become at the next full moon. But before she can complete her plans, they are interrupted by Travis Williamson.   Travis was in the area, running in his four legged form, when his wolf compels him to head straight to Neva.  He doesn't get to her in time to stop her from going over a steep ledge, but he uses his wolf magic to help to heal her until she can get the help she needs. It's not until his wolf nags at him to go check on Neva that he realizes that she will soon be going through her first transition and the hospital is the last place she should be for that. As Travis guides Neva through her first change and works to dispel all the erroneous notions she has of being a "werewolf", he finds the two sides of himself drawn to her. Neva has to come to realize that everything she knows about being a changeling  has been shaded with evil intent and to not tar Travis with the same brush.  Overall, I enjoyed this book.  There were twists and turns to make things interesting, plenty of action, and at the center a romance between two lonely and alone people. I look forward to the sequel and learning more of Travis' past. I gave this book 3 stars on Goodreads.

NUMBER OF HEARTS: 3 REVIEW:  I am kinda on the fence about this book.  I liked the story line. I liked Neva & Travis and a few of the other side characters.  Meredith is one crazy, evil, magic wielding bad guy.  And all in all it was a good book, but there was just something a little off for me.  Maybe be it was the timeline.  Maybe it was Meredith and her getting the upper hands.  Maybe it was my mood.  Or maybe it was the narrator.  I was not overly wild about the narrator at times she was a little too nasally for me and the audio book had some major fluctuations in the sound and quality of the book.   Even with all I will be continuing this series to see what happens with Neva, Travis, Meredith and everyone else.  But the next book I think I will read.  Disclaimer:  This review is my own opinion and not a paid review.

3.5 stars: FIRST BITE is the first instalment in Dani Harper’s new paranormal romance series-Dark Wolf and if you are a fan of Dani’s writing you will definitely see similarities and comparisons with her paranormal Changeling series including the use of the term ‘changeling’. The premise focuses on Neva Ross as she is about to undergo her first change.  On the run from her sire, Neva is determined to end her life before she has had the chance to destroy so many others. Believing that all wolf shifters are werewolves are evil, Neva hopes to destroy the very thing that she is about to become.   But life takes a funny turn when wolf changelingTravis Williamson stumbles upon Neva as she attempts to end it all. What ensues is an epic push and pull between Neva and Travis-both human and wolf.   The relationship between Neva and Travis is one born out of necessity for Neva but out of sympathy for Travis.  Neva pushes Travis away at every opportunity but in the end, her inner wolf knows that without Travis they would probably both be dead. The storyline finds Neva and Travis on the run hoping to elude the sire who wants Neva above all else. And when Travis finds himself imprisoned by Neva’s sire, it takes everything Neva has to rescue the man who would one day be her mate. First Bite is a story about new beginnings; dark magic; power and control; love and sacrifice.  There are moments when you wonder why Travis endures the sarcasm and negative attitude from the woman whom he has helped at every step of the way, but in the end, it will be Neva’s wolf that knows that Travis is her mate, before the human mind has had time to comprehend. Dani introduces several secondary characters including the ‘b*tch queen’ as she is called.  There is definitely more story to be told as  Neva’s sire wants revenge for the disappearance of a powerful piece of magic and the missing wolves who no longer are under her command.

I always love werewolves… But I love them way more when they are written in a story this awesome!! It’s very quickly become on of my favorites and I can already tell you this series will be added to my must buy group! It’s just way too good not to. There’s definitely paranormal romance, but it’s also full of mystery, even with some mysteries left a little open for the next book, without a cliffhanger. It’s the perfect fight of good versus evil and you won’t believe when those plot twists happen, it’s so quick and wickedly smart your jaw will get stuck open! Geneva aka Neva, starts on the literal first sentence as trying to kill herself to keep everyone around her safe. She knows after being forced to become a werewolf, and by the person who bites her, it’s all so shocking. Neva is very stubborn, she is downright crazy, and yet I love her. She’s loyal, even when it’s not called for, she’s sweet to those who don’t give her any reason to be, she’s strong when every single person tries to break her down. I almost didn’t like her… Lol when it started that she was gunna kill herself, I thought she had a good reason but I thought she’d be whiny- UM NO! She’s freaking crazy, and though she started out suicidal, she definitely fights tooth, nail, claw, hair, and paw to survive. She fights to make the good outweigh the bad that had become a way of life for some. I’m so very happy with her and her ending! Travis is your ultimate broken beautiful bad boy! You know, if I were him, after like the tenth time Neva was ugly, or the second or third time she tried to run away, I would have let her LOL!! When Neva finally listens to him, Travis starts to open up, and though he has flaws, he’s an excellent match for Neva. They balance out each other. He frowns and broods, she pouts and challenges him in every way. Their conversations made me giggle. I am hoping to learn more. More about the villain, more about her “army” more about Riley and Baker, more about them all! I can’t wait for more of this story. I loved the writing. I loved the story. This is the perfect paranormal romance especially with enough action that I was glued to it! I can’t wait for book two!! I also now need to read more by this author! :) 5 BLOSSOMING BEAUTIFUL WOLFY PAWS!!

This is an exciting new series. I really didn’t know what to expect from this new werewolf/wolf shifter book but what I got was a wonderfully rich world filled with magic and an epic battle of good and evil with a little romance mixed in for good measure. This feels like it has great possibilities and I look forward to the adventure.

A interesting start to a new series. Two broken people coming together to fight a cause. Neva is smart, determined, and self sacrificing. I liked that even though she was a turned wolf she never blindly accepted anything, it was nice to read about a character with a healthy dose of skepticism. Travis is wandering around moping with guilt from past actions, thank goodness for his wolf because without it he would have been annoyingly emo. The adventure and mystery of the story would have been better if they hadn’t been drawn out. Travis’ past was sad and tragic, but I wish he has just revealed to the reader what he had done early on. After spending so much time talking to his wolf about “what he had done” by the time it was finally revealed I didn’t care. The same went for Neva and Meredith’s connection. Instead of just saying who they were to each other it was slowly revealed throughout the book, but instead of it being shocking it felt like overkill. I also wish Meredith had been a more fully developed character, instead she came across as evil for evils sake. Her story was the most interesting but we never learned what motivated her lust for power. The book ended in a sort of cliffhanger, but it was unnecessary. The main obstacle of the story could have been defeated, but instead was left in power. So in the next book the leads will still be fighting the same old evil, instead of encountering a new obstacle. I may read the next book in the series, but I won’t be anticipating it.
